The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is the nation's leading cancer advocacy organization. Voices Inspiring Valley Action (VIVA) North and VIVA South region are projects within ACS CAN. The VIVA team aims to create community level change and improve quality of life by building capacity in civic engagement, leadership, and advocacy among Central Valley residents. The VIVA team is looking for student interns eager to make a positive impact in their communities. The roles of student interns will be to provide support in data collection, community outreach, media advocacy, and health education in their communities to prevent exposure to, and the use of, tobacco among rural residents of the Central Valley (Chowchilla, Madera, Hanford and Tulare). This will be done under the guidance of ACS CAN VIVA staff via a variety of advocacy strategies and data collection activities.

Internship Activities:

Some of the activities may include but are not limited to the following*

*Note: these activities will be conducted in partnership and with support from ACS CAN -VIVA staff and may be conducted virtual or in-person per community COVID-19 protocols.

1. Data collection:

  • Administer public opinion surveys among community residents and conduct observational data collection (interns will receive data collection trainings)
  • Monitor relevant media news related to tobacco and secondhand smoke

2. Community outreach and education/social media:

  • Participate in community events and activities to provide educational material and tobacco cessation resources
  • Assist in gathering data and updating research for community presentations
  • Assist with development of educational materials including social media content 3. Community advocacy: o Participate in local tobacco prevention coalitions o Assist in collecting community petitions
