A Day in the Life of a Project Planner

Our planning group works on a wide range of projects, including Safety Action Plans, Complete Street plans, active transportation plans, transit plans, multimodal corridor studies, and Safe Routes to School (SRTS). You will manage community engagement, as well as planning activities using the Safe System Approach. Familiarity with GIS, equitable engagement practices, and industry design stands will assist in your development of safety and active-transportation initiatives.

We are known for our progressive approach to community engagement and partner collaborations. The planning team works closely with the design + engineering, landscape architecture + urban design, marketing, graphic design and communications practices within the firm.

As a Project Planner, you will develop relationships with clients and partners, manage exciting and challenging projects, oversee tasks and proposals, lead analyses, represent Toole Design in project and stakeholder meetings, pursue and win work, and reinforce our reputation as trusted experts. You'll collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to deliver a variety of projects focused on making places and travel experiences better for everyone. You'll be at the table with clients and colleagues from a variety of disciplines, integrating input from a broad range of stakeholders to create award-winning plans that lead directly to implementation.

We are targeting a salary range of $70,000 to $80,000 for a Planner II and $80,000 to $90,000 for a Project Planner.

Qualifications of a Project Planner:

  • 4+ years of planning experience (6+ years for Project Planner)
  • A bachelor's or master's degree in transportation or urban planning, landscape architecture, urban design, or a related field, Additional experience can be substituted in lieu of a degree
  • Knowledge of multimodal transportation planning practices and techniques
  • Experience planning and conducting community and stakeholder engagement
  • Demonstrated success independently managing projects and maintaining client satisfaction
  • Strong writing skills and experience working as a lead writer for proposals and planning documents
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
  • Motivation to win work for a growing office including forming and managing client relationships, identifying potential opportunities, and developing proposals and interview materials

It would be a plus if you have any of the following:

  • AICP certification
  • Consulting experience
  • A working knowledge of GIS software (ArcGIS or QGIS) and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator and InDesign)
  • Spanish language skills

Work Schedule for a Project Planner

This full-time position typically works a flexible schedule of 40 hours a week. Connecticut is one of Toole Design's emerging markets, with a growing team throughout the state. We plan to eventually open an office in Hartford, and at that time, the job will switch to a hybrid schedule of 3 days in office, with the option to work 2 days from home. While this position will currently work a fully remote schedule, applicants should be willing to travel within New England to support project activities, and to the Boston office for company activities, as mutually agreed upon during the job during the job interview/offer process.
