The opportunity 

The Principal Optical Engineer will be responsible for the innovation and evolution of key optical component-level technology to enable the next generation of our Mixed Reality experience. They are expected to design optical components and effectively contribute to technical deliverables in these areas to achieve aggressive goals.

The role can be fulfilled in a remote capacity or on-site in Austin, TX,  Boulder, CO, or Plantation, FL.

The focus of this role will be the design of custom eyepieces for Mixed Reality devices.  An emphasis on this role will be cross-functional contributions with several partner teams including eyepiece manufacturing, eyepiece materials, optical systems engineering, and metrology.

What you’ll do 

  • A key member of the Eyepiece Design Team with a focus on eyepiece design
  • Extensive use of (and development of) custom in-house software and commercial simulation tools for eyepiece design, simulation, layout, and fabrication.
  • Collecting, analyzing and interpreting data; technical problem solving; innovating creative solutions, and clear communication of findings.
  • A key part of this role will be cross-functional engagement.  This will involve extensive interaction with cross-functional teams such as eyepiece fabrication, materials research and sourcing, metrology teams, and

The experience you bring

  • 10+ years of experience
  • Expert knowledge of diffractive and polarization optics.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in diffractive optical elements, preferably in the design and fabrication of diffractive optical elements.
  • Proficiency in Python 
  • Knowledgeable of nano-/micro-patterning and replication techniques, including optical lithography, interference lithography, and nano-imprint/molding.
  • High comfort level with scientific programming
  • Experience with diffractive optics design and modeling software, such as gsolver, MEEP,  Zemax, Lumerical, COMSOL or other packages is strongly preferred.
  • Must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Focused on problem resolution and delivering solutions.
  • Must be able to communicate and work well with multidisciplinary groups.

It’s exciting if you also have

  • Experience with imaging optics is desired; experience with display optics is preferred.
  • Experience working in a nanofabrication cleanroom
  • Experience with optical measurements.
  • Experience in materials research
  • Experience and familiarity with color science
  • Experience with Augmented Reality / Mixed Reality  display systems

Our salary ranges are determined by role, level and location. In addition to salary, Magic Leap offers a discretionary bonus, equity, and a fully comprehensive benefits package for eligible employees.
