Datavant has a network of networks consisting of thousands of organizations, more than 70,000 hospitals and clinics, 70% of the 100 largest health systems, and an ecosystem of 500+ real-world data partners.

By joining Datavant today, you’re stepping onto a highly collaborative, remote-first team that is passionate about creating transformative change in healthcare. We hire for three traits: we want people who are smart, nice, and get things done. We invest in our people and believe in hiring for high-potential and humble individuals who can rapidly grow their responsibilities as the company scales. Datavant is a distributed, remote-first team, and we empower Datavanters to shape their working environment in a way that suits their needs.

As a Principal DevOps Engineer at Datavant, you will be responsible for building and maintaining a robust, scalable, and secure infrastructure. The buck stops with you as our Principal Engineering on all things DevOps. You will join a team being constructed to ensure the seamless delivery and operation of our healthcare data logistics platform. The environment you’ll be working in you’ll probably be familiar with. We have built it on many tenants of containerization, infrastructure as code, and automated pipeline delivery. However, Datavant is at a scale moment for the organization where the DevOps team you help craft will set the organization on a path of amazing scale for the coming years.

With your background and current standing as an expert in Kubernetes and Terraform, you will lead efforts to continuously improve our infrastructure, leveraging your expertise to drive key initiatives and mentor others on the team. You will be the type of person that is probably fearless in the face of work and see it as pure opportunity. Your experience and insights will be crucial in shaping the future of our infrastructure.

You’ll bring with you:

  • An opinion informed by your background on how to standardize management of Kuberentes clusters and deployments of infrastructure as code. You will have seen both the bad and good of failed planning and structure and be able to both articulate and execute a well defined path to what great looks like.
    • You understand ecosystem tooling and how it all fits together for the most pragmatic outcome.
  • Extensive experience with Kubernetes, including designing, deploying, and managing production-grade clusters.
  • A strong proficiency in Terraform, with a track record of implementing complex IaC solutions.
  • A deep understanding of multiple cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) and their respective services.
  • Deep experience with containerization technologies.
  • Extensive experience managing a fleet of Cloud Environments and Kubernetes Clusters in a standardized way
  • A mastery in scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash) for automation and configuration management.
  • Deep knowledge on Github and Github pipelines (Actions) and an understanding of the design decisions you would make to scale.
  • A solid understanding of networking, security principles, and best practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with remote teams.

You will work on:

  • Making our cluster management amazing. Collaborating with development teams and your peers in CloudSec to ensure seamless integration and deployment of applications within Kubernetes environments.
  • Developing and maintaining Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform to automate the provisioning and management of cloud resources.
    • Including helping Datavant to transition legacy deployments and tooling into a standardized model with Terraform.
  • Helping with the development and maintenance of CI/CD pipelines to facilitate automated testing, deployment, and scaling of applications.
  • Implementing robust monitoring, logging, and alerting solutions to ensure the health and performance of our infrastructure.
  • Providing guidance and mentorship to junior DevOps engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Ensuring security best practices are adhered to across all infrastructure components with your CloudSec peer team.
  • Providing top level troubleshooting and resolution to infrastructure issues, providing timely and effective solutions.
    • Datavant has an KTLO team. Your work is primarily focused on projects to foster greatness. You will be involved in runOps only when you or your team is needed in tier 3 support scenarios where you are the definitive expert.

Bonus points if:

  • Experience with monitoring and logging tools (e.g., Primarily Datadog).
  • Experience with service mesh technologies (e.g., Istio, Linkerd).
  • Knowledge of classic configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Chef, Puppet).
  • Familiarity with serverless architectures and functions-as-a-service (e.g., AWS Lambda).
