Principal-Computational Research Scientist

The Principal Computational Research Scientist is responsible for managing large-scale computational research projects, develops research strategies, and designs computational research under little supervision.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead computationally focused scientific research projects with minimal supervision from their PI.
  • Develop computational research strategies including new technologies and methods in partnership with Principal Investigators.
  • Manage large-scale, multidisciplinary projects through proactive research collaboration, and provide direction in specific area of expertise.
  • Design and conduct high-quality computational research.
  • Analyze emerging trends and technical advances, generate new research concepts and procedures, and lead adoption.
  • Oversee collection and management of data, data analysis, and interpretation of results/findings for laboratory projects to translate research discoveries into meaningful changes in scientific and clinical practices.
  • Publish as first author or co-author for complex projects or in high-impact interdisciplinary journals; provide peer review guidance as a member of an editor board (as applicable).
  • Present insights as an expert at external meetings and conferences.
  • Serve as a mentor and provide coaching and guidance to research staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the department and institution.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.

Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • Bachelor's in Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Master's degree or PhD preferred.

Minimum Experience:

  • Minimum Requirement: Bachelor's degree and 13+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience Exception: Master's degree and 11+ years or relevant experience (OR) PhD with 8+ years of relevant experience.
  • Rough criteria for this position based on publication output: 5-6 first author papers IF > 10 (or equivalent contribution to other research outputs).
  • Experience directing multiple complex research studies from end to end in a technical capacity.
  • Proven experience in driving results indirectly through a team of researchers.
  • Experience training and guiding early-career researchers.
  • Proven performance in earlier role/comparable role.

Compensation

In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $138,320 - $262,080 per year for the role of Principal-Computational Research Scientist.
