Description
Who We are:At Wagepoint, we’re good people. Sure, maybe we’re biased. But that’s only because Wagepointers bring the best versions of ourselves to do some of the best work in our careers.
We’re an authentic team who bring our diverse backgrounds, ideas, experiences and cultures together to make payroll magic. Speaking of, we “pull rabbits out of hats” for thousands of small business owners across the US and Canada who rely on our payroll software to pay their employees and process their payroll taxes. And we’re just getting started.
We’re growing and looking for more awesome people to join our merry band of misfits. We are looking for people who share our understanding that when it comes to our commitment to our customers: we mean business. Especially given that the consequences of getting payroll wrong can sometimes be dire.
If you are the kind of person who has always wanted to make a difference and be heard at work, Wagepoint will give you plenty of opportunity to do just that.
The Role at High Level: We’re looking for a talented Platform Engineering Lead who doesn’t shy away from tackling hard problems and interesting (well, most times) subjects like payroll and HR technology. You will help define Platform Engineering at Wagepoint, implementing our shared vision while ensuring that product engineering teams can build, deploy, and operate applications and services efficiently.
This role is a mix of team leadership (25%) and hands-on technical execution (75%), balancing developer enablement, infrastructure complexity, security, and site reliability. You’ll work closely with leadership to shape the platform roadmap, while making sure engineering enablement remains a top priority. You will report directly to our Vice President of Engineering.
What You'll Be Expected To Own:
- Define and execute platform strategy by working closely with leadership to align technical decisions with business and engineering objectives.
- Architect and maintain cloud infrastructure with a primary focus on Azure, while supporting legacy AWS applications.
- Lead technical design decisions for scalability, reliability, security, and cost optimization.
- Improve developer enablement by creating self-service tools, CI/CD automation, and infrastructure as code (Terraform, Kubernetes, etc.).
- Act as first responder for critical platform incidents, improving incident management processes and fostering a shared responsibility culture.
- Ensure security, compliance, and governance policies are embedded across the platform.
- Support team operations by organizing workflows, coordinating sprint planning, and fostering team collaboration.
- Mentor and manage a small team of platform engineers, ensuring their success and professional growth.
What You Bring To The Table:
- 5+ years of experience in platform engineering, cloud infrastructure, DevOps, or site reliability engineering (SRE).
- 2+ years of technical leadership experience (team leadership, mentorship, and cross-functional collaboration).
- Strong background in Azure cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, and automation.
- Deep understanding of networking, security best practices, and cost optimization in cloud environments.
- Experience working in high-scale SaaS environments with a focus on developer enablement.
- Knowledge of agile development methodologies and DevOps practices.
Bonus points if:
- Azure and/or AWS certifications (e.g., Azure Solutions Architect, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer).
- Experience designing self-service developer platforms.
- Strong experience with observability, monitoring, and alerting tools.
- Previous experience improving developer productivity through automation and tooling.
What We Bring To The Table:
- Impact: Roll up your sleeves and directly contribute to the growth and success of Wagepoint by shaping our workforce.
- Culture: The opportunity to work with the world’s friendliest team, solving interesting problems together with an endless amount of laughter (We work hard, but we always have time for a bad joke or two).
- Growth: Opportunities for professional development and career advancement - we are always, always learning with a growth oriented mindset.
- Innovation: Work in an environment that encourages creativity and new ideas.
- Remote: The ability to work from home, forever! Wagepoint is a remote company, so you don’t have to worry about commuting to an office. Plus, more time with your pets is always a bonus!
