Ocean Associates Inc. (OAI) is seeking an applicant to provide technical and scientific editing support to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center.  OAI is a Virginia corporation established in 2003 that provides consulting and technical services to the U.S. government, non-governmental organizations, international organizations, and the private sector. We specialize in scientific program and project management, strategic planning, professional and technical services, and stakeholder engagement, supporting government contracts. We are seeking applicants for this position prospectively, which is dependent on award of contract.

Background

The Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), headquartered in Honolulu, Hawaii. The PIFSC has taken a leading role in marine research on ecosystems, both in the insular and pelagic environments. As part of this work, PIFSC has been implementing a multidisciplinary research strategy including an ecosystem observation system, and scientific analysis to support ecosystem approaches to management and restoration of living marine resources. It conducts a wide range of activities including resource surveys and stock assessments, fishery monitoring, economic and sociological studies, oceanographic research and monitoring, critical habitat evaluation, life history and ecology studies, and advanced oceanographic and ecosystem modeling and simulations. The PIFSC’s Director’s Office (DO) has a requirement for technical/scientific editing services.  

Description

Numerous peer-reviewed publications, technical memoranda, administrative reports, web-based stories, news articles and cruise reports are generated as a result of PIFSC research activities and editorial support is required to edit and process these manuscripts and documents on a daily basis.

Duties

  • Edit scientific manuscripts, technical memoranda, administrative reports, website stories, news articles, and other documents for publication in peer reviewed journals, internal report series, web pages, and other outlets intended for public distribution to ensure quality of information disseminated by the project. 
  • Ensure all documents are in compliance with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (29 U.S.C. §794d) and provide technical assistance on Section 508 to PIFSC Authors. 
  • Coordinate the editorial and publications process including attending weekly meetings with the publications team. 
  • Advise research staff on technical writing requirements, guidelines and best practices, including, but not limited to, supporting development of a PIFSC style guide and journal submission guidance document. 
  • Assist the lead editor with the development and implementation of editorial and publications management procedures, including, but not limited to, the use of regional languages. 

Start Date: Contingent upon award of contract.

Location: Remote/Telework.

Travel: Travel is not anticipated.  

Salary and Benefits: This is a full-time position with benefits. Salary, commensurate with experience, between $25-$45 per hour.

Requirements:

Applicants must have the following minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English or related field from an accredited four-year college with at least two years of post-university work experience in editing English-language publications
  • One or more years of work experience as a full-time scientific and technical editor
  • At least one year of work experience in copy editing and markup and use of Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat
  • At least one year of work experience with APA Style and American Fisheries Society 
  • At least one year of work experience with printing technology and online manuscript processing
  • At least one year of work experience demonstrating a high level of proficiency in technical writing (supported by e.g. performance reviews, letters of reference or published technical documents)
  • At least one year of experience working in teams on similar types of work
  • At least one year of experience with technical/scientific editing in a federal government research environment 
  • Preferred Background with fisheries, oceanography, socioeconomics, protected resources, and related fields of study
  • Basic computer skills (MS Office, etc.)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively both individually and collaboratively in a team/group setting
  • Ability to receive constructive feedback and implement appropriate action
