Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Payroll Administrator with strong expertise in payroll processing, benefits-related payroll items, and large HRIS systems, particularly Paycom. Union experience is preferred, as the role involves managing payroll for unionized employees. This role will focus primarily on payroll administration while supporting benefits-related tasks as they relate to payroll. The ideal candidate thrives on accuracy, compliance, and providing exceptional service.

This position is a 1099 contract role with the potential for future opportunities.

This is a full time, exempt, remote position based out of Berkeley, CA.

Benefits

Compensation: $75,000 - 85,000/year.

Responsibilities

Payroll Administration

  • Manage bi-weekly payroll inputs in Paycom for all employees, ensuring accuracy and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Reconcile payroll data, including timecards, tax withholdings, benefits deductions, and union-related payroll elements.
  • Oversee union payroll compliance, including dues, benefits, and applicable agreements.
  • Ensure compliance with payroll tax regulations and handle any discrepancies or adjustments in a timely manner.

Benefits-Related Payroll Support

  • Administer payroll-related benefits processes, including health insurance, retirement plans, and taxable fringe benefits.
  • Collaborate with the benefits team to process employee enrollments, changes, and terminations as they affect payroll deductions.
  • Ensure compliance with ACA, COBRA, and other benefits-related regulations.
  • Assist in the reconciliation of benefits invoices and 403(b) contributions.

Employee Support

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for payroll and payroll-related benefits inquiries, providing excellent customer service.
  • Support employees with timecard issues, pay discrepancies, and general HR/payroll system guidance.
  • Train employees on Paycom functionalities, including timekeeping and accessing pay stubs.

Process Improvement and Compliance

  • Assist in developing and documenting payroll workflows to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Conduct audits of payroll data and processes to identify and resolve issues proactively.
  • Partner with HR leadership to create strategies for streamlining payroll and benefits administration processes.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field preferred (or equivalent work experience).
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of payroll administration experience, with extensive experience in Paycom
  • Experience processing payroll for unionized employees highly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of payroll compliance regulations, including wage and hour laws, tax withholdings, and benefits deductions.

Skills and Competencies

  • Proficiency in Paycom is mandatory, with expertise in payroll and benefits integration.
  • Familiarity with union payroll processes and collective bargaining agreements is a strong plus.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to handle sensitive employee data with confidentiality.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently to resolve payroll discrepancies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other financial reporting tools.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification is a plus.
  • Experience with benefits administration and reconciliation.
  • Familiarity with ACA, COBRA, and related compliance requirements.
