Metaculus is a leading public forecasting platform, dedicated to providing trusted insights on complex, global challenges. We work with organizations tackling critical issues such as geopolitical risks, frontier AI, and global public health, helping them harness forecasting and collective intelligence to improve decision-making and policy outcomes.
As our Operations Lead, you will play a key role in ensuring Metaculus runs smoothly and efficiently, supporting our internal team, external partners, and forecasting community. This position is at the core of our organization’s ability to scale its impact—your work will ensure that financial, administrative, and operational systems function seamlessly so that our team can focus on delivering high-quality insights to decision-makers and the public.
Responsibilities
Business Operations (~60%)
- Own day-to-day HR operations, ensuring smooth payroll, benefits administration, and HRIS system management (Rippling).
- Work with our third-party financial controllers, bookkeepers, and tax specialists to ensure accurate financial record-keeping and reporting.
- Manage accounts payable/receivable, budgeting, and financial compliance.
- Support with grant applications and reporting, contract drafting, and internal policy updates in collaboration with leadership.
- Plan events such as meetings, workshops, and offsites.
- Perform some general administrative tasks (mail processing, checking voicemail), ensuring nothing slips through the cracks.
- Analyze operational workflows and identify areas for improvement to enhance efficiency.
Program & Platform Operations (~40%)
- Support forecasting tournaments, client projects, and coordination of our Metaculus Pro forecasters.
- Assist with platform communications, such as drafting tournament winner announcements and other key updates for review.
- Maintain and improve tracking systems, including CRM updates and documentation of prospective projects and client interactions.
- Support analytics and reporting, helping track platform performance and key engagement metrics in collaboration with the team.
Gain exposure to forecasting work and how it informs decision-making by supporting programs and platform operations, with opportunities to explore areas of interest within Metaculus’ mission.
Location
This is a fully remote position. We welcome applicants from all time zones. However, given the location of existing team members who will collaborate closely with this position, our preference is to fill this role with a candidate with consistent availability for collaboration between 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM PST (4:30 PM to 8:30 PM GMT).
Remote Work Culture
Metaculus is a small (~15 full-time, ~5 part-time), highly collaborative team that values deep independent work alongside real-time interaction. We use Slack and Google Meet to stay connected across time zones. We have in-person retreats/offsites 1-2 times per year for team-building and deep strategic work.
Requirements
- Operational Experience: 2+ years of experience in a business or nonprofit context, with demonstrated skills in bookkeeping/accounting, human resources, and/or general operations.
- Tools: Experience with at least several of the following tools/platforms is important: Rippling, Deel, Ramp, Quickbooks Online, Notion.
- Analytical Mindset: Strong data analysis skills with the ability to monitor metrics, identify trends, and propose actionable insights for operational improvements.
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of interacting effectively with various stakeholders across our internal team and with external partners.
- Problem-Solving Abilities: Proactive approach to challenges, with the ability to think critically and navigate through operational issues.
- Passion for Mission-Driven Work: An enthusiasm for contributing to Metaculus’ mission.
Bonus Skills
- Familiarity with Forecasting: Understanding of crowd forecasting.
- Proficiency with Tools: Experience with the operational and finance platforms we use: Google Workspace, Slack, Quickbooks, and Rippling are among the most important ones you would be interacting with on a day-to-day basis.
Hiring Process
- Initial Interviews – A 2-3 step process to assess experience and fit.
- Take-Home Assignment – A short practical exercise to evaluate problem-solving abilities.
- Paid Working Interview (~10 hours) – Work on real tasks alongside our team.
We aim to follow up within 2-3 business days after each stage.
Compensation
Salary: $80,000 - $120,000 USD, depending on experience.
Note: We expect that most finalist candidates would receive offers in the bottom half of this range, but we may extend offers in the upper half to candidates with significant experience and who are an exceptionally good fit for the role.
