Operational Development Engineer

The Opportunity


As an Operational Development Engineer, you’ll have the exciting opportunity to apply and expand your engineering expertise, playing a crucial role in preparing the site for the world-class performance of the next generation of pressurised water reactors in the UK. You'll help build the future operational capability by implementing and refining technical standards and strategies in close collaboration with various teams.


Being assigned several key systems, you’ll be responsible for delivering engineering support, managing design changes, ensuring long-term system health, overseeing maintenance specifications, working with OEMs, managing spare parts, and diagnosing faults. This role is essential in ensuring the smooth transition from construction to operation at Hinkley Point C.

What You Will Be Doing


As an Operational Development Engineer, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring the seamless transition of our facilities from construction to operation. Reporting to a Discipline Lead, your day-to-day activities will involve a blend of technical support and collaboration, all aimed at optimising plant performance. Here’s what you can expect in this dynamic position:

 

  • Support Control Centre processes to facilitate smooth plant handovers from construction through commissioning and into operations.
  • Develop in-depth technical knowledge of HPC systems, encompassing both nuclear and conventional plant areas.
  • Maintain crucial technical and functional interfaces with responsible designers, central engineering, commissioning teams, contract partners, the EPR fleet, and existing generating stations.
  • Take engineering responsibility for assigned systems, ensuring optimal performance and long-term health through effective maintenance and inspection regimes, including preventative maintenance strategies and performance monitoring techniques like condition monitoring and predictive maintenance.
  • Contribute to design changes and document equipment reliability and criticality assessments, while also ensuring compliance with Licence Condition 28 and managing periodic test documentation.
  • Develop and implement maintenance work instructions to support ongoing system health and performance.
     

Who You Are


We're looking for a qualified professional like you to join our team, bringing a blend of technical expertise and hands-on experience in engineering management. If you have a passion for operational plant systems and assets, this role might be the perfect fit for you. Here’s what you’ll need to bring to the table:
 

  • A relevant HNC/D or degree (or equivalent) along with experience in a technical or engineering discipline.
  • Previous technical or engineering management experience with operational plant systems and assets, including any of the following systems and components:
  • Pumps and motors
  • Valves and actuators
  • Pressure systems
  • HVAC
  • Lifting equipment
  • Steam turbine and process systems
  • Experience in a regulated industry is essential.
