National Tax Practice Managing Director of Tax Policy

Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with tax leadership and Cherry Bekaert firm leadership to help execute the Firm’s strategic plan, as well as support other leaders in their execution of the strategic plan.
• Collaborate with the NTPO practice that is responsible for providing technical and new legislation guidance, quality and risk management, and technical training. As a member of the NTPO practice, work with a team of professionals responsible for executing the following:
  • Provide support for the Firm’s tax practice by reading, researching, and analyzing new tax guidance on emerging tax issues and trends, implementing successful tax strategies in response to legislative, federal, and judicial tax developments, and by supporting tax thought leadership and learning and development.
  • Ensure that NTPO tax technical services to clients are of the highest quality and exceed the expectations of clients for timely, responsive service.
  • Advise internally on thought leadership technical matters that require sound judgment in addition to tax technical expertise.
  • Advise on interactions with the Treasury Department, including the IRS, and the OECD.
  • Author and deliver external and internal thought leadership to support tax practice growth.
  • Advise clients and advise internally on tax reform and other tax policy matters, including working with the Office of Public Policy. Consult and collaborate with practice leaders to identify key areas of technical support and opportunities for business arising from new developments.
  • Represent Cherry Bekaert at major conferences and with outside organizations, such as the Tax Executives Institute, that address current developments in legislative proposals, judicial decisions, regulatory and administrative guidance, as well as tax administration and tax policy, developing thought leadership, speaking, writing, and teaching.
  • Help to recruit, develop, and retain NTPO staff.
  • Help to act as a Career Advisor to NTPO Collaborate with others on talent development, progression, and succession.

  • Help to ensure that all Firm Tax management, professional practice, and business processes are consistently applied in the NTPO. 
  • Represent the NTPO as required.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• CPA, JD, LLM, and/or MST/MBT required.  
• Prior experience in “national” tax practice office quality control/policy development required.
• Demonstrated ability to help lead, develop, and enhance the knowledge of a technical team of tax subject matter experts.  
• Prior leadership experience on the Hill, Treasury and/or the IRS is desirable. Experience authoring key legislative tax matters is a plus.
• Proficiency in various tax applications and research tools required (CCH Access, RIA Checkpoint, BNA, or similar).
• A broad base of knowledge in tax compliance, tax consulting and client service, with expertise in a few key areas of taxation.
• Capacity to build and maintain strong relationships with Firm and client personnel to achieve the Firm’s vision, strategy, and goals.
• Ability to work in a deadline-driven environment and handle multiple projects simultaneously with a team and independently.
• Excellent project management and analytical skills.
• Superior verbal and written communications skills with the ability to evaluate and articulate complex information via email, phone, and video.
• Drive success while not sacrificing integrity, dependability, or trustworthiness.
