Heggerty is a literacy leader providing innovative, research-proven reading and writing solutions for Pre-K through 5th-grade classrooms. Heggerty’s integrated collection of literacy solutions provides teachers with the approachable, research-backed resources they need to close student skill gaps and supplement existing ELA curricula.
About the role
- We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Literacy Content Editor to join our mission-driven team. In this role, you will be responsible for editing and refining a variety of educational materials for early literacy teachers and their students, ensuring content is engaging, accurate, and aligned with curricular standards. You may also be involved in some light content development, helping shape and craft materials that support literacy instruction and foster student engagement.
- As an intermediate-level editor, your primary focus will be on conducting content editing for our curricula products, ensuring that materials are not only accurate and grammatically correct, but also aligned with educational goals, age-appropriate for students, and inclusive of diverse learning needs and perspectives. You will work closely with subject matter experts, authors, instructional designers, and production teams to bring content from initial concept through to final publication. You will also have opportunities to contribute to the creation or direction of new educational resources, working to expand and improve the company’s offerings.
- The ideal candidate will have a passion for education, a strong understanding of literacy and language development in the K-12 space, and exceptional editorial skills. You should be able to think critically about how content can best support student learning, while maintaining a keen eye for detail and a collaborative mindset. You must also have experience managing print production files, coordinating print requirements, and maintaining a production calendar.
What you'll do
- Content Editing: Perform in-depth content editing of early literacy materials for K-5 educators, ensuring that content is pedagogically sound, age-appropriate, and aligned with literacy standards, especially in foundational skills. Work to ensure the content is engaging, accurate, and meets diverse learner needs.
- Alignment and Collaboration: Partner closely with subject matter experts, authors, instructional designers, and production teams to take content from initial drafts to final publication. You will also help ensure smooth collaboration with design vendors and other external partners as needed.
- Project Management & Workflow Coordination: Manage and prioritize multiple editorial projects across both print and digital product lines. Maintain production calendars, and ensure deadlines are met across overlapping workflows.
- Quality Control: Develop, implement, and enforce editorial guidelines, processes, and workflows to ensure consistent, high-quality content production. Contribute to the maintenance of content assets in organized file structures for efficient management.
- Vendor and Team Coordination: Coordinate with internal teams and external vendors (e.g., designers, print vendors) and, when necessary, manage teams of contract writers to ensure content creation aligns with project goals and timelines.
- Content Development: Support the creation and shaping of new educational resources, ensuring alignment with curriculum goals and the needs of both teachers and students. This may include light content development work.
Qualifications
- Experience: A minimum of 5 years of experience editing educational content, with a focus on early literacy and foundational skills (K-5). Must have experience with content editing, not just copyediting, preferably within the educational publishing or edtech industry.
- Experience with educational products (both print and digital), especially in the early literacy space. Prior experience with decodable texts is a plus.
- Editorial Skills: Strong editorial skills, with particular expertise in early literacy content (reading and writing).
- Ability to develop and maintain content editing guidelines, workflows, and processes.
- High degree of accuracy and consistency in editing work.
- Project Management: Experience managing multiple projects with overlapping timelines in both print and digital formats.
- Strong organizational skills, able to maintain structured content folders and manage high-level schedules.
- Ability to manage complex workflows and adhere to deadlines.
- Collaboration: Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams (e.g., instructional designers, authors, production teams).
- Technical Skills: Experience working with Google Docs, Adobe (including markup of PDFs), and tools like InDesign.
- Communication: Excellent written communication and attention to detail.
- Prioritization: Strong prioritization and organizational skills.
- Vendor Management: Experience working with external vendors (designers, printers) and understanding print and digital workflows.
- Advanced Technical Skills: Proficiency in InDesign and Adobe suite, and familiarity with educational technology tools and platforms.
- Team Leadership: Experience managing or coordinating teams of contract writers and content creators, with the ability to provide clear direction and feedback.
