Onsite are roles that have specific onsite requirements and are typically onsite daily.

Hybrid fixed are roles that are a blend of onsite work/in-person interactions with some ability to work remotely and require employees to live within a commutable distance and be onsite fixed days each week.

Hybrid flexible are roles that can be performed remotely but require some level of onsite work/in-person interactions on a regular basis, require employees to live within a commutable distance and, since business needs vary by position and may change over time, managers will set expectations and flexibility regarding where and when work is performed.

Fully remote are roles that can be performed remotely, require employees to live in approved states and will have purpose-driven in-person interactions on occasion.

Job Summary

This is a position within the Protection & Controls (P&C) Design Engineering group within the Electric T&D – Projects & Construction organization.  This position requires a broad knowledge of electrical utility and engineering principles and practices acquired through progressive experience and/or education. This position requires a strong technical background in protection & controls engineering for substations to develop and implement designs for transmission and distribution projects. This position must have at least seven (7) years of electrical protection & controls design experience working for an electrical utility on transmission/distribution projects.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide protection and controls design for electrical utility projects for transmission and distribution at voltage levels within the PSE&G operating territory.
  • Proficiency working on protection and control drawings including one line diagrams, relay protection schematics, instrumentation, control, and alarm schematics, SCADA controls, racks and panels views, wiring diagrams, cable schedules and bill of materials.  Proven experience in transmission line, bus, and transformer protection, high voltage breakers, Gas-insulated switchgear, distribution switchgear, and other high voltage equipment.
  • Coordinate and work collaboratively with electrical layout designers, civil designers, electrical project engineers, system protection engineers, construction supervisors, and construction field personnel.  Actively participate in technical discussions as needed by the project teams.
  • Provide technical reviews of protection and controls designs completed by other A&E engineering firms.
  • Lead, mentor, and provide guidance to other junior engineers and designers.
  • Conduct field site walkdowns as required on projects to assess field conditions, evaluate scope of work on a project, compare and verify drawing content, and meet with field personnel and other stakeholders to collaborate on project requirements. Provide technical expertise to the Divisions and construction personnel.
  • Coordinate with vendors and manufacturers in reviewing technical documentation including vendor drawings.
  • Be an active participant and contributor to standards development and improvements in the design processes.

Job Specific Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Seven (7) years or more of Protection & Controls electrical utility design experience and knowledge of electrical substations and switching stations equipment, e.g., transformers, circuit breakers, medium voltage switchgear, gas insulated stations (GIS), regulators, capacitor banks, disconnect switches, AC/DC distribution and other associated equipment for substation electric transmission and distribution systems.
  • Candidate must possess a proficient knowledge of protective relay schemes and applications, SCADA, metering, A.C & D.C power and controls, alarms, fiber optic communication and equipment monitoring systems.
  • Proficient in working on one line controls, schematics for protective relays including microprocessor relays, control schematics, alarms, auxiliary power, SCADA and metering circuits, etc. and understanding of electrical layout drawings in order to effectively support projects.
  • Computer skills: Microstation (Bentley) CADD, MS Office (Word, Excel), Acrobat, etc.
  • Clear and concise writing and verbal communications skills.
  • Experience working on large complex design projects, including GIS projects, as well as adhering to project schedules and preparing man-hour estimates.
  • Experience in reviewing design work from other A&E firms to comply with PSE&G standards.
  • Shall work with minimum supervision and be a good team player.
  • Because the job requires driving to company locations and off-site assignments and events, must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license with a safe and satisfactory driver history.

 

Desired:

  • Masters degree or technical training.
  • Familiarity with utility best practices, IEEE, ASME, NESC and NEMA Standards.
  • Experience with PLCs, substation data concentrators, digital fault recorders and similar equipment.
