The Opportunity
As our next Laboratory Team Leader (LTL), you will play a pivotal role in managing and driving the success of the chemistry and environment laboratory operations at HPC. Leading a team of skilled Chemistry and Environment Technicians, you will oversee their day-to-day activities, ensuring seamless operations and fostering a safe, high-performing laboratory environment.
In this role, you will ensure all laboratory work at HPC is conducted safely and meets the highest standards. They will also take the lead in preparing for future site laboratories, laying the groundwork for success.

What you will be doing
As the Laboratory Team Leader, you will take on a critical leadership role in shaping and managing the chemistry and environment laboratory operations at HPC. This position offers a unique opportunity to drive excellence in laboratory practices, foster a culture of safety and compliance, and contribute to the success of a dynamic and growing team. Additional responsibilities include:
- Lead and inspire the Chemistry and Environment Technicians.
- Manage all HPC laboratory work, ensuring requirements are identified, planned, and delivered to the highest quality and safety standards.
- Coordinate laboratory activities, including routine maintenance and service tasks.
- Administer and oversee all service contracts for laboratory instrumentation.
- Ensure the safe and compliant completion of all preparatory work for laboratory activities.
- Train and support Chemistry and Environment Technicians to ensure they are equipped for their roles.
- Oversee the safe, compliant execution of all laboratory tasks with proper authorisation and risk assessments.
- Plan and implement the fit-out of future station laboratories.
- Review and maintain laboratory records for accuracy, completeness, and trend analysis.
- Report any out-of-tolerance results promptly to the Chemistry Lead.
- Maintain sufficient stocks of laboratory chemicals and consumables.
- Be a positive and motivating influence within a growing chemistry team and the broader operational organisation.
Who you are
We’re looking for you to be a motivated individual looking to take on a key leadership role in our laboratory operations. With a focus on delivering high-quality results, you will bring a strong scientific background, a proven ability to lead teams and projects, and a commitment to innovation. Experience in diverse team settings, managing projects, understanding laboratory instrumentation, and knowledge of power plant chemistry are desirable and will further strengthen your fit for this role. Additional requirements for this role include:
- A Level or higher qualification in a scientific discipline.
- Experience working in a laboratory environment.
- An understanding of laboratory quality assurance methods.
- Proven experience leading projects or programmes of work, ideally within a multi-disciplinary team.
- Experience in leading people, whether direct reports or within a collaborative setting.
- A track record of developing and/or implementing new processes.
