Penguin Random House is seeking a Junior Designer/Designer to join its Illustrated Gift program at the industry-leading Clarkson Potter imprint. Clarkson Potter is renowned for its publishing within the food & drink, design, gift, wellness, and pop culture space; collaborating with authors and licensors such as Wizards of the Coast’s Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering, Eric Carle, Richard Scarry, Moorea Seal, Amanda Gorman, the New York Botanical Gardens, and the Smithsonian, among others. 

 

The Role: 

 

  • Designing eye-catching and unique packages across a variety of content and formats; including but not limited to puzzles, games, journals, small gift books, and card decks. 
  • Working closely with editors, art directors, and production staff on full package designs from concept to approval. 
  • Preparing mechanical files for production and review, and correct proofs and printer mockups. 
  • Some light retouching, color correction, and other prepress production work is required. 
  • Strict adherence to schedules and the flexibility to respond to critiques in a timely manner. 
  • Partnering with art directors and project teams to communicate progress on projects. 
  • Communicating feedback to freelance designers and illustrators, and helping to manage freelance workflow: sharing freelance design and illustration work with art directors and editors, etc. 
  • Participating in product research and development. 

The Essentials: 

 

  • Candidates for Junior Designer will have a minimum of 1 year design experience in a publishing or print-media design department--preferably with hands-on experience in longform design. Designer candidates will have at least 2 years of similar design experience. 
  • The ability to design conceptual and on-trend packages, work with existing brand assets, and iterate within branding guidelines to create asset extensions. 
  • Experience working with printer die-lines and templates. 
  • Strong typographical design sense 
  • Proficient knowledge of the MAC platform and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat). 
  • Familiarity with using InDesign style sheets, master pages, Pantone Matching System, and general pre-press design-related production knowledge, such as pre-flighting. 
  • Ability to apply organizational methods and strategies to meet deadlines. 
  • Timely follow-up skills with the design team and other departments, and the ablity to coordinate and review multiple projects in a fast-paced and detailed-focused environment. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills  

Additional skills/interests:  

 

  • A desire to work in a highly collaborative environment. 
  • Interest in working on a wide variety of licensed and authored projects, both Children’s and Adult. 
  • Interest in working with illustration.  
  • Interest in working on both commercial and indie-styled projects. 

 

The salary for the Junior Designer is $53,000 and the salary as a Designer is $63,000.  All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
