Purpose of Position
The Civil Engineering (CE) department has maintained a balance of teaching excellence with significant research activities. The faculty team has demonstrated a high level of research contribution that goes well beyond the accomplishments of its faculty members. Over the past five years, externally sponsored research expenditures and student headcount increased by 566% and 42%, respectively. The department has played an instrumental role in creating the Transportation Technology Research Institute (TTRI) from its inception to its current form. It is a win-win partnership between the University of North Dakota and the North Dakota Department of Transportation. It focuses on autonomous systems for infrastructure condition assessment and Artificial Intelligence for safe and cost-effective decision-making, advanced material characterization, and structural design. It is also critical to recruit, train, retain, and graduate students with real-world experience designing structures under the supervision of a professional engineer and working on research with experts in the fields. This gives a competitive advantage to our students in the 21st-century economy. The department leveraged the TTRI to be part of the Region 8 University Transportation Center with ten other universities from Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming. The selection for the Departmental Excellence in Research Award is a testament to some of the achievements.
Most CE faculty members have had a heavy teaching load because of the significant increase in student population. The student-to-faculty ratio is about 61. A new instructor will help to reduce the student-to-faculty ratio to balance our teaching and research responsibilities, serve our students better and increase retention rate, recruit more on-campus undergraduate students by working with other stakeholders, etc.
