Information Specialist Internship Program (ISIP) Intern

Department Overview:
The Information Specialist Internship Program (ISIP) is designed to provide experience, mentoring, and training that will complement and enhance each student’s specific academic and career development goals. ISIP’s structure is based upon a two-year cycle, divided by three to four units/modules per year that focus on the foundations of library and information professions.The internship provides participants with experience in different work environments representative of the academic profession, and essential experiences in the following areas: collection management, information technology, public services, and special libraries & programs.

Interns complete five half-semester modules in the following areas:
Collection Management
Information Technology
Public Services
Special Libraries & Programs
The internship concludes with a full semester capstone experience in support of each intern's academic or career interests.
Sample Module Descriptions
College Library Public Services
This module is an introduction to public service in libraries. It includes circulation, facilities management, instruction, and reference, as well as direct interaction with a variety of library staff mentors. Often, this module is a starting point for ISIP students. It creates an opportunity to engage one of the most visible/familiar components of library work, point-of-need service. We’ll ask that you learn and work while sharing your authentic experience as a user, reflecting on how service is designed in user-driven ways while you learn the basics of our structures and philosophy. College Library is a teaching library for novice researchers with introductory content on every academic discipline. Our staff will be inclined to engage you as a learner first, but also to situate your learning in useful work and projects. Expect equal parts on-the-job learning at scheduled desk shifts / instruction sessions, and project work that can be completed with a great deal of weekly flexibility.
Office of the Gender and Women's Studies Librarian
The Office of the Gender and Women’s Studies Librarian is one of the premier resources for support of gender, women’s studies, and LGBTQ+ scholarship and librarianship. Housed in Memorial Library, the GWSL serves the UW System and beyond. This module provides students with experience in a multitude of areas, including: reference, public service, publishing, and digital projects. Students will have the opportunity to work with the two editors on staff, the librarian, and the office program associate. During this module, students may work on the following two digital projects: Wisconsin Women Making History and Women’s Knowledge Digital Library. There is also the potential to create gender, women’s studies, and LGBTQ-specific research guides and bibliographies.
