Home and Sleep Reviews Editorial Fellow (January 2025)

The Reviews team at Business Insider is hiring a Home and Sleep Reviews fellow to support coverage of home and sleep-related topics through hands-on testing, research, and writing.

The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week and can be fully remote.

The Role & Team:

As a Home and Sleep Reviews fellow you will write in-depth, researched reviews, guides, and supplementary stories that help our readers find great products that make their lives better. They will help our Reviews editors research, test, and write about everything from pillows and bed sheets to furniture and decor. This fellow will spend their time doing meaningful work: researching, writing, interviewing, pitching, helping with our catalog of updates, and covering the wide world of home products.

A major perk of this role is getting to test home products, including mattresses, bedding, and furniture; the ideal candidate understands that this often requires time, space, and person-power, including coordinating delivery and donation of large items, regularly changing out pillows and sheets for testing, and doing durability testing of fabrics through many loads of laundry in a home machine.

This role reports directly to the senior home editor and sits on the Reviews team. This role will be remote, with the option to come into our New York office. 

Key Responsibilities:

• See a guide from inception to publishing: including pitching, research, developing a testing methodology, requesting product, testing, taking photos, contacting category experts, writing, production, and proofreading  
• Assist with guide updates, including checking product inventory, links, SEO and data recommendations, identifying new products to test, etc
• Call in and coordinate delivery of review samples and log deliveries 
• Staying on top of new product launches and news relevant to beat
• Be available for major deal events, such as Amazon Prime Day

The ideal candidate has:

• Experience reporting and writing (school publications are great)
• A passion for digital storytelling, service journalism, and voracious reading habits
• Time management skills and the ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
• Proofreading and copyediting skills and familiarity with Associate Press Stylebook
• A working knowledge of SEO, CMS systems, and digital and social media
• A love of Business Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that’s accurate, fair, fast, and fun

Additionally, for the home & sleep fellow, we’re looking for someone with the following:

• A passion for home and sleep products; you know the value of curating a comfortable home filled with products you love and you’re eager to find what’s new in the home and sleep space. 
• Ability to test sleep products in your home, including pillows, sheets, and mattresses. This will include coordinating large deliveries, setup of large items, and laundering items for testing.
• The ability to distill expert information in a way that is understandable and meaningful to the average person; you find a way to make your readers care about pillow fill or appliance wattage.
• An interest in leveraging data to support coverage and decisions.
• A critical eye; you’re methodical in your approach and decisive in your opinions; you use expert interviews and hands-on testing to decide what’s “the best” and can write about your thoughts with conviction, confidence, and evidence to back it up.
• Meticulous organization; an ability to keep track of dozens of products and keep detailed notes of your testing. 
• Ability to take clear and original photos (smartphone is fine); basic experience with Adobe Photoshop or Canva.

Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:

• A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
• Familiarity with digital and social media
• The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
• Proofreading and copyediting skills
• A love of Business Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that’s accurate, fair, fast, and fun 

• Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
• PTO and paid holidays
• Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment
