Health & Benefits, Principal Consultant – SME Facility Portfolio Solution Manager

What to expect:

The SME Facility Portfolio Solution Manger will be a Principal Consultant in our Health Practice and lead strategic consulting engagements with small to medium sized employers regarding their group insurance benefits plans.

The successful candidate will be responsible for driving and executing the MMB facilities strategy for our Small to Mid-Size clients across Canada.  The successful candidate will be assigned a portfolio of business whereby client servicing; renewals, marketing of group benefits, plan monitoring and expansion into our Simple select by Mercer Marsh BenefitsSM – a One-Stop-Shop for our mid-market clients will be the focus.

Level of support provided depends on size of client as well as complexity and revenue of the account – at this level the consultant is the client lead and is often the Mercer relationship manager.

  • Report into the SME National Leader to collaborate, report and refine dedicated SME solutions for market segment

  • Manage different projects (renewal, request for proposals, redesign, program implementation, financial projections, etc.) from start to finish;

  • Participate in delivering impactful solutions for organizations of any size and varied industries and have a direct impact on their employees, leveraging our dedicated solutions for this market segment and pre-negotiation carrier arrangements.

  • Ensure the quality of deliverables and respect of timelines;

  • Develop budgets and prepare invoices;

  • Act as the client’s primary contact for the work and preparation/delivery of results;

  • Act as an intermediary between clients and insurers;

  • Provide expert advice and strategic support for project management;

  • Work with Mercer subject matter experts to help clients with complex situations that require additional research or discussion;

  • Delegate and oversee the work of more junior team members.

We will count on you to:

  • Provide important feedback on the SME Facility solutions to the SME National Leader to improve nation wide consultant adoption and link into leadership strategic priorities.

  • Be part of the SME National Team and assist with quote requests to dedicated facility for this market segment

  • Validate and compare premiums for group benefit plans under vendor renewals, quotes or benchmarking exercises with other companies in the industry; 

  • Deliver experience monitoring reports to clients and identify and articulate the impact of any unusual activity or recent changes; 

  • Deliver and explain financial statements of group insurance plans and review the financial agreement to suit the client needs; 

  • Analyze cost drivers by reviewing client's utilization data and looking for year-over-year trends or comparisons to external benchmarks using data provided from client's vendor reports or raw data from external databases  

  • Perform technical reviews of any of the above when prepared by a junior member of a client team 

  • Gather necessary data from the vendor or client; review to ensure it is complete, accurate and reasonable; and review data prepared by a junior team member for use in basic or advanced financial analyses. 

  • Work with your client teams to develop recommendations and reporting for clients based on the client team’s your analysis 

  • Provide coaching and guidance to junior members of client teams 

What you need to have:

  • BA degree in commerce, business, economics, finance, actuarial science, mathematics, statistics or human resources equivalent

  • 8+ years of relevant experience in group insurance

    • Have or be working towards a relevant insurance license

  • Understanding of employee benefit plans and current healthcare issues

  • Superior analytical, strategic planning, communication, and listening skills

  • Excellent organizational and project management skills with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple and complex tasks in a demanding work environment

  • Ability to manage, motivate, and mentor more junior level staff

  • Bilingual (English/French)

The applicable base salary range for this role is $114,000 to $189,000.

The base pay offered will be determined on factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and any applicable minimum wage requirements. Decisions will be determined on a case-by-case basis. In addition to the base salary, this position may be eligible for performance-based incentives.
