Job Summary
The Group Underwriting Consultant (I/II) is responsible for underwriting small to medium-size cases for both new and renewal business, including developing proposals, managing add-on business, and revising contracts within set authority levels. This role utilizes underwriting methods and techniques for financial analysis and manual rate development. The Consultant works with increased communication between sales, brokers, and internal departments, reviewing contracts, plan designs, and benefit options in greater detail. The Consultant I handles more straightforward cases, while the Consultant II will manage more complex cases requiring deeper expertise and judgment.
• Prepare proposals and coordinate final presentations, including required exhibits.
• Respond to underwriting team requests accurately and in a timely manner, maintaining positive communication with internal and external stakeholders.
• Build credibility with the sales force, brokers, and customers.
• Use AB’s workflow management tools to document decision-making processes.
• Analyze data related to small to medium case risks to determine benefits and rating.
• Review and manipulate census data for use in rating tools to generate manual rates.
• Communicate with policy owners, applicants, brokers, and agencies regarding underwriting decisions and procedures.
• Review master policy change requests for eligibility.
• Conduct research to gather additional data needed for benefit and premium decisions.
• Make independent case-level decisions, adhering to underwriting guidelines.

Skills and Background You’ll Need
Group Underwriting Consultant I
• 2+ years of relevant underwriting experience or related field.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
• Strong analytical skills and ability to evaluate data for financial and risk analysis.
• Experience in developing proposals and working with underwriting tools and systems.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Group Underwriting Consultant II
• 3+ years of relevant underwriting experience or related field.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
• In-depth experience managing more complex underwriting cases and risk assessments.
• Strong expertise in analyzing financial and risk data for a variety of cases.
• Experience in working with multiple departments to assess and resolve more complex cases.
• Proven ability to handle high-level decision-making with minimal supervision.
• Ability to mentor or guide less experienced team members.

Please note - the salary range for this role is listed below. In addition to salary, our package includes incentive plan participation and comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision and retirement benefits, as well as an initial PTO accrual of 164 hours per year. Employees also receive 11 paid holidays and 2 wellness days per year.
Eligibility to participate in an incentive program is subject to the rules governing the program and plan. Any award depends on various factors, including individual and organizational performance.
Salary Range:
$64,250.00 - $94,000.00Positions will be posted for at least 5 days from original posting date.
