Position Summary:

The National Audubon Society seeks a Grant Accountant to monitor Audubon’s assigned portfolio of government and foundation grants. The successful candidate will partner with program staff to analyze spending levels and to facilitate timely close-out of grants.

This is a remote position within the United States.

Compensation:

Salary range based on geo-differentials:

  • $55,000-$65,000/year = National

  • $60,000-$70,000/year = Alaska, CA (not San Francisco), Connecticut, D.C., Chicago, Oyster Bay, NY

  • $66,000-$76,000/year = NYC (not Oyster Bay), San Francisco, Seattle

Essential Functions

Work with program and development staff to monitor awards, using a strong understanding of OMB Circulars, funding agency regulations and internal financial management controls and systems.

  • Prepare financial reports and variance analysis for high profile grants. Review results with program staff and prepare budget modifications as needed.

  • Perform federal drawdowns per field requests. Reconcile all billings to general ledger.

  • Maintain receivable schedule for all government grants. Review coding from departments for compliance, ensuring that direct expenses coded to grants/contracts are allowable under contract/grant provision.

  • Review and process journal entries for the month-end close.

  • Verify that match shares are correctly calculated and identified in the general ledger. Review documentation for in-kind support.

  • Create grant codes for new grant awards. Enter and maintain budgets and other grant data in Audubon’s proprietary grant tracking system.

  • Provide financial data to development staff for grant proposals.

  • Interact with Grant Specialists and FP&A team to ensure audit compliance.

  • Assist with year-end close and the Uniform Guidance Single Audit.

  • Assist the Manager, Grant Accounting with other grant audits and preparation of schedules for Audubon’s year-end audit, as needed.

  • Assist with annual preparation of federal indirect cost proposal.

  • Attend trainings and informational sessions to stay apprised of funders’ requirements.

  • Assist with Audubon staff to ensure that equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging principles are incorporated and followed in all aspects of our work.

  • Other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting and/or finance required.

  • 3-5 years relevant professional experience. An equivalent combination of education and work experience will also be considered.

  • Thorough understanding of government grant accounting guidelines and donor-restricted funds preferred.

  • Effective and persuasive written and verbal communications skills; ability to successfully recommend courses of action, present information to and work with program managers and staff.

  • Strong Excel skills and knowledge of Financial Edge NXT software preferred.

  • Experience working for nonprofit organizations highly desired.
