Job Description:
Position Summary:
The GIS Technician will work under the Program Manager of Geospatial Science as part of a team of science and conservation staff to develop applied science products (including analysis, reports, mapping, data visualizations, web maps and applications as well as mobile data collection applications) to inform conservation programs, natural resource management and communicate conservation outcomes. The GIS Technician will work on projects across priority California conservation landscapes (Coasts, Deserts, Central Valley and Urban) and programs, including, Coastal and Estuarine, Groundwater, Conservation Ranching, Salton Sea and Western Water. The GIS Technician will work across many California Landscapes on a variety of projects and products to meet conservation program and organizational goals.
We seek a motivated, creative problem solver who will perform a variety of technical work from basic map creation to assisting with more complex spatial analysis and remote sensing. The GIS Technician will also act as an aid in data management and collaborate on projects and reports with internal and external and technical and non-technical staff.
Compensation:
Salary range based on geo-differentials:
$25.00-$27.00 / hour = CA (not San Francisco)
$27.00-$30.00 / hour = San Francisco, Bay Area
Additional Job Description
Essential Functions:
Perform geospatial analysis across multiple data themes (e.g. remotely sensed data and imagery, natural resource, social, environmental data) and landscapes.
Integrate data from multiple internal and external data sources into GIS projects and products.
GIS data creation and quality control and assurance.
Work directly with internal staff from different conservation programs
Develop web-based mapping products and applications using ArcGIS Online.
Develop and maintain mobile data collection applications (including Collector and Survey123).
Be able to work on multiple and unrelated ongoing projects at a time.
Assist with technical reports and develop project summaries and briefs.
Work on GIS projects, products and deliverables.
Other GIS related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience:
BA/BS degree in GIS, geography or other physical or natural science.
0-3 years professional GIS experience OR MS/MA degree focused on GIS or applied use of GIS in the natural or physical sciences.
Experience using Esri suite products including ArcGIS Pro and Enterprise and/or ArcGIS Online and related products such as Collector, Survey 123 and Story Maps.
Experience with data conversion, projections and transformations.
Ability to create spatial data from non-spatial data.
Knowledge or willingness to learn python scripting to automate geoprocessing.
Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point).
Ability to work at a computer for extended periods.
Self-starter with a strong collaborative work ethic and ability to work independently and remotely.
Sound independent judgement and problem-solving ability.
Ability to multi-task and shift priorities to manage expectations.
Ability to work across disciplines.
Strong attention to detail, organized and deadline oriented.
Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
Ability to synthesize and communicate technical and complex information for a non-technical audience.
A willingness to travel in-state, occasionally out-of-state, and be comfortable with working occasional evenings and weekends.
Willingness and ability to occasionally work in the field
