Department Overview:

Wisconsin Geological & Natural History Survey (WGNHS) Mission:
The Survey conducts earth-science surveys, field studies, and research. We provide objective scientific information about the geology, mineral resources, water resources, soil, and biology of Wisconsin. We collect, interpret, disseminate, and archive natural resource information. We communicate the results of our activities through publications, technical talks, and responses to inquiries from the public. These activities support informed decision-making by government, industry, business, and individual citizens.

Schedule:

The position will require at least 8 hours a week with additional hours encouraged. Flexible schedule with hours set independently after initial in person training. Work through the summer is required, with possibility to continue into the 2025-2026 academic year if interested.

Qualifications:

To be considered eligible for this position, you must meet all of the following minimum qualifications:
• Willingness to learn ArcGIS Pro software (no prior experience necessary)
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Attention to detail
• Ability to problem solve
• Knowledge and skills to effectively interact with people from different cultural backgrounds, including those associated with race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and other aspects of human diversity.
• Employment will require a criminal background check
• Student must be enrolled for credit at an educational institution. Student will need to show proof of enrollment before starting.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap) or ArcGIS Pro
• Familiarity with parcel maps, subdivision plats, and the public land survey system (PLSS)
• Experience in geology, hydrogeology, or environmental science

Remote work will require a high speed internet connection.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

• Review water well point locations and attributes, compare to reference parcel, address, and imagery layers
• Edit location and attribute data to improve spatial accuracy, assess data quality
• Depending on background and interest, additional tasks may include interpreting stratigraphy from well records and assisting with geologic mapping fieldwork.
