Job Description

We’re looking for an experienced Web Developer to bring our brand to life by building and maintaining beautiful, performant, and accessible web experiences. Reporting to the Web Manager on the marketing team, you’ll collaborate with designers, marketers, researchers, support teams, writers, and product managers to deliver high-quality, impactful web solutions. Working alongside two other developers, you’ll play a key role in the development of tailscale.com, internal and external web tooling, marketing communications, branding initiatives, and more.

We’re a fully remote company seeking a curious, strategic, and creative developer who is passionate about web technologies and thrives on collaborative, cross-functional work. Key Responsibilities

  • Build and Maintain: Develop and enhance tailscale.com, including landing pages, docs, sales forms, and knowledge-base tooling.
  • Focus on Scalability: Write clean, efficient, and maintainable code for web applications, focusing on scalability and performance.
  • Architect and Optimize: Build reusable, scalable components and optimize for performance, including using Next.js features like ISR (Incremental Static Regeneration), SSR (Server-Side Rendering), and edge functions.
  • Empower Content Creators: Maintain and improve self-serve content publishing workflows in our CMS (Sanity) for use by cross-functional teams across the company.
  • Contribute Across Projects: Work on a range of tasks from small bug fixes to developing reusable components and optimizing infrastructure.
  • Collaborate and Influence: Partner with designers, marketers, and other engineers to deliver high-quality web experiences.
  • Drive Innovation: Experiment with new tools and technologies to enhance the website's functionality and user experience.
  • Mentor Team Members: Share knowledge, review code, and help teammates grow in their technical abilities.
  • Ensure Consistency: Advocate for and contribute to our design systems and development standards, ensuring a consistent user and developer experience.
  • Documentation: Write clear documentation for both technical and non-technical audiences to support internal stakeholders and team operations.

What We Are Looking For

  • Technically Skilled:
    • Frontend Expertise: Advanced proficiency in modern JavaScript/TypeScript and React.
    • Next.js Proficiency: Extensive experience building, optimizing, and deploying web applications using Next.js, including key features like ISR, SSR, and API routes.
    • HTML & CSS Mastery: Deep understanding of responsive design, semantic HTML, and modern CSS practices. Specifically Tailwind CSS.
    • Jamstack Savvy: Hands-on experience with Jamstack architectures, including edge functions and third-party integrations.
    • Headless CMS Knowledge: Familiarity with Sanity CMS and the ability to build and extend content models effectively.
  • Highly Organized: You excel at managing multiple projects, prioritizing tasks, and delivering quality work on time.
  • Adaptable and Curious: You’re resourceful and eager to dive into unfamiliar areas, quickly learning what’s needed to succeed.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Excellent interpersonal, time management, and collaboration skills. Ability to give and receive constructive feedback effectively.
  • Proactive and Detail-Oriented: You anticipate challenges and resolve them efficiently, contributing to a seamless development process.
  • Professional Background: 5+ years of experience as a frontend engineer or in a similar role.
  • Next.js Expertise: Demonstrated ability to design and build scalable web applications using Next.js, including optimizing for performance and SEO.
  • Tooling: Strong familiarity with Vercel or AWS for deployment and performance optimization and Sanity CMS for stakeholder enablement.
  • Testing: Experience with modern testing frameworks and practices. Including tools like Mutiny and/or UserPilot.
  • Problem Solving: A demonstrated ability to analyze problems, propose innovative solutions, and implement them effectively.
  • Analytics and Experimentation: Familiarity with A/B testing, segmentation, and experimentation tools, and the ability to implement tracking tools for analytics.
  • Design Partnership: You have worked closely with design teams on applying designs to the frontend of the website.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Hugo and/or Go
  • Experience building interactive graphics and micro-animations to create engaging user experiences
  • Knowledge of maintaining and standardizing brand guidelines in digital products
  • Background in creating visual material for complex SaaS technology solutions at B2B or enterprise technology companies

As a company, we strive to maintain fair and equitable compensation practices within our team across all roles and all levels. Tailscale's compensation package includes base salary, equity, and comprehensive benefits. The salary range displayed on each job posting represents the target range for a new hire's base salary. Individual offers may vary based on experience and skill set.

 

US Pay Ranges$164,000—$204,000 USD
