As a Front End Lead Engineer you’ll use your extensive knowledge of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS to improve the Heroku user experience. You will collaborate closely with Product, Design, and other engineering teams to spec, conceptualize, build, test and deploy new features for our large user base.

The Heroku Front End Engineering is a team of software engineers with a diverse group of backgrounds, different areas of expertise, and similar passions for software development that highly involves aesthetics, design, and cross functional/platform team work! What you will be doing:

  • You'll brainstorm with other leads, Architects, Product Managers and Designers to conceptualize and plan new features

  • You'll learn about new web technologies and discuss potential solutions to problems

  • You'll help our skilled support team triage bugs and troubleshoot production issues

  • You'll mentor other engineers and deeply review code

  • You’ll monitor our systems as part of an on-call rotation

  • You’ll help evolve our front-end applications to meet the evolving needs of our customers, our platform, and adapt to changes in the wider front-end ecosystem

Requirements:

  • 6+ years working on large-scale, complex production web applications

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a distributed team and a willingness to take ownership of problems

  • Experience with TypeScript and Rub

  • Experience with modern HTML5, CSS3

  • Working experience with modern front-end frameworks, such as Ember, React, Vue, Rails, etc. to have an opinion of the trajectory of the front-end ecosystem

  • Working experience with development tools such as Webpack or Vite, JavaScript package management, ESM (ECMAScript Modules)

  • Awareness of TypeScript and comfort with helping to evolve a codebase to make more use of TypeScript

  • Experience with responsive web design and awareness of modern approaches (such as container queries)

  • Experience with building applications that satisfy web accessibility guidelines, and an awareness of techniques for building accessibility-first applications

  • Strong understanding of the fundamentals of web page and site performance, especially an awareness of how to use the Chrome developer tools to identify and address performance bottlenecks in the context of production applications

  • Strong understanding of web application security (mitigating DDOS attacks, Web application firewall, Cross-site Scripting, etc.)

  • Strong understanding of modern frontend modularity, including components and separating model logic from UI logic

  • Experience mentoring inexperienced engineers

  • Ability to take ownership of projects and drive them to completion while coordinating with other engineers on active projects or to help plan upcoming projects

  • Proven ability to communicate technical designs with clear documentation and visualization

  • Understanding front-end testing methodologies, test-driven development, and associated frameworks (QUnit, Mocha, and other related test frameworks a plus)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field

For New York-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $184,000 to $253,000.

For Colorado-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $1,673,000 to $230,000.

For Washington-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $167,300 to $253,000.

For California-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $184,000 to $276,100.

Compensation offered will be determined by factors such as location, level, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Certain roles may be eligible for incentive compensation, equity, benefits.
