Description

SFI is seeking a part-time Fishing Community Liaison to support, develop, and foster partnerships with charter fishing communities in the Southeast region (NC to FL), and assisting with outreach support for reducing impacts of vessel strikes on endangered whales.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Building relationships with charter fishing communities: Actively engage with charter fishing operators from North Carolina to Florida to establish trust and collaboration on conservation initiatives.
  • Educating communities on conservation efforts: Provide targeted outreach and education to help fishing communities understand the importance of reducing human impacts on endangered whale populations.
  • Supporting efforts to mitigate vessel strikes: Assist in developing and promoting best practices to minimize the risk of vessel strikes on endangered whales in Southeastern waters.
  • Facilitating communication between stakeholders: Serve as a liaison between charter fishing communities and environmental agencies.
  • Monitoring and feedback collection: Gather feedback from the charter fishing communities to assess the effectiveness of outreach initiatives.
Requirements
  • This position is fully remote; however, regular local travel in the Southeast region of the US is required. Candidates should reside in NC, SC, GA, or FL, or be willing to relocate to one of these states. Intermittent attendance in the local office may also be required.
  • 6+ years of experience working in the charter fishing industry on vessels between 35ft and 65ft. 
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of the Southeast maritime community with a focus on the charter fishing industry that operates vessels between 35ft and 65ft in size.
  • Familiarity with large endangered whales and laws governing them such as the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
  • Willingness to travel at least once per month where the duration of travel may range from one (1) to five (5) days).
  • Excellent communication, organizational skills, and initiative.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the Google Suite (Mail, Docs, Sheets, Meet, etc.)


Desired Skills and Qualifications

  • 100-TON Masters License.
  • Experience developing, publishing, and presenting informational materials.
  • Excellent writing and public speaking skills.

  • In order to meet the clearance requirements for this opportunity, candidates must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • All candidates will be subject to a complete background check to include, but not limited to Criminal History, Education Verification, Professional Certification Verification, Verification of Previous Employment and Credit History.
  • Public Trust background investigations can take approximately four to eight weeks and requires fingerprinting.

  • The salary for this position is $35,000 - $50,000 annually
