Job Description

 

Seeking a driven, engaged graduate-level student interested in helping New England’s electric grid operator (“ISO-NE”) achieve 100% clean energy by joining Advanced Energy United’s (“United”) Expanding Wholesale Markets (EWM) team. This position would report directly to the Director for United’s ISO-NE advocacy work within EWM team. In this role, the EWM intern would monitor and study various issues related to electric transmission planning, interconnection, and/or wholesale power market design. The intern will follow issues as they move through the stakeholder process, providing updates and analysis on recent developments, and or explore long-standing issues within the field that impact clean energy policies relevant to our members. The internship will pivot around one or two key projects such as a literature review type report/memorandum on a specific issue, and or conducting research and analysis related to strategic stakeholder partnerships, member intel, or policy decision-makers. Some discretion can be granted on what topics the intern covers depending on their interests, so long as they support United’s success criteria that govern our organizations priorities. 

 

This position is ideal for graduate students who are interested in unlocking clean energy through regional electricity markets and transmission reform from an economics, regulatory, and policy level. Only candidates with an energy or environment related engineering, legal, regulatory, or economics background and demonstrated interest in the energy field are eligible for this position.

 


Key Responsibilities: 

  • Attend NEPOOL committee meetings remotely (or in person) and provide updates to the Director and members as needed
  • Conduct research and analysis and write summaries and or internal memos on specific issues raised at committee
  • Research and assess the merits of various ISO-NE market designs and stakeholder proposals at NEPOOL
  • Conduct literature reviews and or analysis of regulatory dockets before FERC on topics related to transmission, interconnection, and wholesale electricity markets in New England
  • Conduct research and analysis and write summaries and or internal memos on specific issues raised by member companies
  • Research member companies, key stakeholders, and decision makers regarding their business models, portfolios, technologies and products to inform how United can best support their interests
  • Monitor news and developments in New England that affect transmission, interconnection, and wholesale electricity markets 

 


Qualifications 

  • Enrolled in or graduated from a graduate-level degree in economics, energy law or regulation, or electrical/power systems engineering
  • Organized, communicative, and detail-oriented individual
  • Eagerness and willingness to learn and engage in challenging and complex topic matter
  • Positive, energetic attitude and ability to work collaboratively internally and with stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently in a collegial, flexible work environment
  • Demonstrated research and analysis skills in fields of either economics, law, or power systems engineering
  • Interpersonal and relationship building skills are a plus


The intern must be located in the DC, MD, VA area for the summer, a commutable distance to our DC office.  A final project will be due from each intern and presented to the organization.

Hours: 30 to 40 hours per week   
Compensation: $18.00/hr
