Job Description
Advanced Energy United seeks a proactive and detail-oriented Policy and Advocacy Intern to join our Expanding Wholesale Markets team for the Summer 2025 program. The ideal candidate would be a junior/senior college student or graduate student with an engineering, legal, or economics background. This role will help support United’s mission of achieving 100% clean energy and work to shape a clean energy future through engagement in the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) and Southwest Power Pool (SPP) stakeholder processes. Potential topics include transmission, interconnection, distributed energy resources and other wholesale market reforms, culminating in a final project.
The role may include attending relevant stakeholder meetings (virtually) to track market developments and processes. It will focus on changing the rules governing how existing wholesale electricity markets operate to expand opportunities in support of the growth of clean energy resources and the retirement of aging incumbent technologies. The intern may be responsible for research and reporting as well as preparation of advocacy materials (comments, presentations, letters, fact sheets, etc.). The ideal candidate will be a motivated self-starter with interest and experience in policy and politics, wholesale energy markets, clean energy, and climate. Candidates should be creative and flexible, able to explain complex topics clearly, and have the ability to prioritize and move between projects as needed to support United’s work in a wide variety of areas.
Key Responsibilities:
- Monitor and summarize relevant MISO and SPP stakeholder meetings.
- Draft, review, and edit advocacy materials like letters, and presentations.
- Conduct technical research and/or literature reviews to analyze, summarize and write reports or internal memos on key issues raised at stakeholder meetings.
- Monitor news and developments in the Midwest that affect transmission, interconnection, and wholesale electricity markets.
The intern must be located in the DC, MD, VA area for the summer, a commutable distance to our DC office. A final project will be due from each intern and presented to the organization.
Qualifications:
- Enrolled as an upperclassman in a college or in a master’s level graduate program studying economics, energy law or regulation, or engineering.
- Collaborative worker with excellent research, writing, and communications skills.
- Interest or experience in policy analysis, policy advocacy, and/or market analysis; some experience with FERC or competitive wholesale electricity markets and stakeholder processes preferred.
- Independent, flexible self-starter.
- Intellectual curiosity, inquisitive nature, quantitative and analytical skills, and excellent listening and problem-solving skills.
Required Skills: Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
Preferred Skills: Detail-oriented; intellectually curious; interest in advanced energy and/or a public policy career
