To support ICF’s dynamic growth and expanding client base, we are seeking an Environmental Health Sciences Research Assistant to work in our Health Science Practice. This group of 140+ science professionals provide toxicology, hazard assessment, epidemiology, risk assessment, exposure assessment, environmental modeling, and related support that addresses the full spectrum of potentially hazardous agents, including chemicals and microbes. We specialize in identifying, quantifying, and documenting the effects of environmental pollutants, such as metals, pesticides, and volatile organic compounds, on human health and the environment.

The Environmental Health Science Research Assistant’s project work will support federal agencies (such as U.S. EPA and NIEHS), state agencies, and private sector clients in developing reports that assess the human health impacts of pollutants. Specific activities include qualitative literature review activities, support for scientific meetings, and project management. The Environmental Health Science Research Assistant will contribute to the development of innovative, accurate, timely, and high-quality products and services, typically working on multiple projects with all levels of staff; they have the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge, gain exposure to major projects, and interact with experts and clients in the field, while building content knowledge and consulting skills.

The position can be located remotely, although preference is for a candidate to be located in either Reston, VA, or Durham, NC.

As an Environmental Health Science Research Assistant, you will:

  • Lead tasks and projects to accomplish client goals and objectives.

  • Work on a diverse team that specializes in identifying and quantifying the effects of environmental pollutants, such as metals, pesticides, and volatile organic compounds, on human health and the environment. For example:

    • We support the Environmental Protection Agency’s Center for Public Health and Environmental Assessment (CPHEA) in developing risk assessments, such as Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) assessments. We also provide fate and transport modeling, exposure modeling, and risk assessment support to EPA’s Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards and Office of Water.

    • We also support the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the Division of Translational Toxicology (DTT) in conducting systematic reviews and developing reports.

  • Review scientific and peer-reviewed literature to research a broad variety of scientific topics in environmental risk assessment, synthesize findings, and communicate them through various formats and media (e.g., written reports, online websites, visualizations).

  • Conduct study data extraction using electronic systematic review procedures and tools.
