Engineering Lead


Location: Aztec West, Bristol – with flexibility of working from other sites (HPC Site, Satellite Delivery Centre Bridgwater, Nuclear Services Gloucester Business Park) and home, minimum of 3 days in office.

The Opportunity


As an Engineering Lead in Nuclear Island (NI), you'll play a pivotal role in overseeing the technical direction within the 'N2' Area of Hinkley Point C (HPC), particularly focusing on the Safeguard Auxiliary Buildings housing the Main Control Room,  key reactor safety systems and Instrumentation & Control systems. This role comes with a special emphasis on providing strategic and delivery leadership in multi-disciplinary issues for HPC. Your responsibilities will include driving major technical initiatives and providing strategic leadership on complex, multi-disciplinary issues for the N2 Area scope.


In this role, you'll oversee safety critical structures, systems, and components across various disciplines including civil, mechanical, I&C, electrical, and HVAC. Reporting to the N2 Area Engineering Manager, you'll take on a leadership role, spearheading the delivery of our most complex and impactful technical initiatives.

What you’ll be doing

 

As an NI Engineering Lead, you will play a crucial role in driving technical solutions across the HPC project by collaborating with various stakeholders. Your leadership will be essential in problem-solving, managing risks, and ensuring informed decision-making that aligns with project goals. You will be pivotal in addressing complex issues and fostering innovation to deliver the N2 scope effectively. Additional responsibilities include:

 

  • Collaborating with a diverse range of stakeholders to resolve cross-functional technical issues and mitigate emerging risks.
  • Leading problem-solving initiatives and managing risk strategies to enhance project visibility and decision-making.
  • Providing a decisive escalation route for deadlocked issues, acting as a catalyst for innovative solutions.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with key teams across the EDF Group to ensure the timely delivery of technical reports.
  • Identifying and implementing opportunities for continuous improvement within the project.
  • Mentoring and supporting colleagues, contributing to the achievement of broader team and individual goals.
     

Who you are

 

  • To be suitable for this role, we’re looking for you to bring a technical background with a relevant degree in Engineering or Science, with a drive to delivering a successful nuclear new build project in line with HPC’s targets for safety, quality, time and cost. Ideally you'll bring experience in the nuclear industry, demonstrating a strong understanding of safety cases and regulatory frameworks although this is not mandatory.
  • You’ll showcase proficiency working across multiple engineering disciplines such as civil, mechanical, I&C, electrical and HVAC, but also with the ability to collaborate effectively with subject matter experts and project managers. Your role will require leading technical and commercial discussions, managing substantial budgets, and ability to problem solve with a solid technical focus.
  • We’re looking for someone who has been involved in the project lifecycle of complex EPC projects, including design, construction, commissioning, and ideally operations. You’ll prioritise delivery excellence, ensuring project success through a results-driven approach.
  • Strong communication skills are essential, as you’ll be navigating multi-level and multi-cultural environments within major projects and organisations. Fluent English proficiency is a must, and proficiency in French would be an advantage but is not a requirement.
