Description
Ember is recruiting an Energy Modeller/Analyst to strengthen our Asia programme, with a particular focus on addressing barriers to power sector transition in ASEAN countries. In this role, you will be responsible for developing and using models to analyze key energy policy questions and producing research reports based on insights from these models to inform ongoing policy discussions around energy transition in the region.
The area of work could include a range of topics including power sector transition, power system flexibility, managed coal phasedown, energy market reforms, etc. You will work closely with other analysts in Ember’s Asia programme and other national partners across Asia to deliver on Ember’s objectives in the region.
To be successful in this role, you will need a proven track record in energy system modelling, experience in producing compelling data-led research or analysis, and a strong understanding of the regulatory frameworks and power markets in Southeast Asia
Location
This is a remote role, working with a pan-Asia team. We are looking for candidates located within a time zone range from GMT (UK) to WIB (Jakarta) for optimal collaboration.
Requirements
Key responsibilities
- Develop and maintain energy system model for Southeast Asia
- Collect and analyse data necessary for your research, while liaising with Ember’s data team
- Liaise with colleagues, including analysts to ensure that the models reflect actual system operation and market dynamics
- Produce compelling, data-led reports based on the modelling results
- Build and maintain a network of external stakeholders to maximise impact on the wider policy debate and explore opportunities for collaboration
- Support in addressing media queries related to clean electricity transition in ASEAN countries
Must have
- Minimum 5 years of experience working in a research or an analytical role on energy transition in southeast Asia
- At least 3 years experience in energy systems modelling on both capacity expansion and dispatch
- Strong understanding of the power sector and energy transition challenges in southeast Asia
- Experience of independently writing reports, policy briefs and op-eds as well strong verbal communication skills
- Skill for communicating the key insights from a complex subject or dataset in an accessible and compelling way.
- Should be able to work independently; able to multitask; set priorities and meet deadlines with limited direction while working remotely
- Fluent in English
Nice to have
- An established network in southeast Asian organisations (regional, national and/or multilateral); ability to develop and maintain new relationships with policy-makers, government departments, think-tanks
- Experience in engaging with media in Southeast Asia
- Fluent in one or more languages spoken in Southeast Asia.

Benefits
Salary: £33,907 - £40,688.
Salaries could be adjusted upwards for candidates from high cost of living countries, depending on a location cost of living formula.
Contract: Full time (but only working 9 days every fortnight with no reduction in pay), permanent subject to a 3 month probationary period. For employees based outside of the UK, a local payroll contract is available, dependent on the country.
