Editorial Director, BOOM! Studios (Open to Remote)

BOOM! Studios, an imprint of Random House Worlds, seeks an experienced Editorial Director to join the team in a pivotal role within the Editorial department.
The Editorial Director will report to and work with the Editor-in-Chief to set and execute select editorial priorities within the BOOM! Studios List, as well as manage a group of editors within the Editorial department. Priorities include identifying and pursuing authors and books that will help define the future of one or more of the imprints within BOOM! Studios, guiding supervised editors to produce high quality creative content and acquire books that contribute to and grow our List, and supporting the Editor-in-Chief in shaping a growing, profitable program that speaks to and represents the diversity of our potential audiences and society.
Our ideal candidate is highly motivated, passionate about publishing, possesses an intimate knowledge of the comic book and graphic novel marketplace, and enjoys seeing a wide variety of projects from inception to completion. We are looking for a driven self-starter with high level time-management and organizational abilities, strong leadership and management skills, excellent editing and writing skills, exemplary analytical and communication skills, a deep network of contacts in relevant categories, and a strong desire to be an active participant on a collaborative team.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Collaborate with Editor-in-Chief to carry out the editorial vision and strategy
- Acquire and edit anchor titles that contribute to the overall commercial creative execution of the BOOM! Studios List
- Oversee a group of editors with varying levels of experience, develop their personal goals, and provide mentorship
- Foster a highly collaborative workplace centered around a culture of excellence
- Collaborate with Editor-in-Chief to optimize processes across multiple departments and teams, including Sales, Managing Editorial, Design, Production, Publicity, and Marketing
- Be the project manager and primary point of contact for overall scheduling, communication, administration, and creative development and production for all titles directly under purview
- Negotiate contracts for new projects being acquired
- Identify and contract new talent, and retain high performers
- Collaborate on and create go-to-market strategies, run development meetings, and identify key opportunities for sales-marketing
- Work closely with production design on branding, packaging, and general design
- Provide and enforce deadlines for talent on all facets of editorial production
- Support the sales, marketing and metadata teams by helping provide metadata and assets
- Manage creator and licensor approvals on editorial production assets
- Distribute periodic updates, reports, and presentations (weekly, monthly, seasonally)
- Perform other related projects or duties as assigned or required

- 7-10+ years’ experience in comic book & graphic novel editorial is required
- Previous experience supervising/managing a team of Editors is a plus, though other forms of leadership or mentorship will also be closely considered
- Superb organizational, prioritization, and time management skills
- Exceptional attention to detail, proofreading skills, and strong follow-up skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively and meet deadlines, take initiative, and problem-solve creatively
- A team player with the ability to build relationships with other departments. A collaborative spirit is essential
- A strategic and critical thinker who observes market conditions and trends to help inform creative decision-making
- Outstanding ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment
- Solutions-focused when met with challenges and can comfortably adapt to changes and anticipate needs when once familiar with the role
- Creative and entrepreneurial spirit to channel innovation into book form
- Curiosity for new voices, ideas, and breaking trends with a focus on backlist conversion
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams)
- Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, and/or Asana a plus
The BOOM! Studio division of Random House Worlds is based in New York City. This position is open to remote candidates.
The salary range for this position is $95,000-110,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results.
