Job Description

The successful candidate will implement Allstate’s efforts to enhance legal operational efficiency and business processes for the legal department, leading a global team engaged in our outside counsel management program, and collaborating with data and tech partners. The successful candidate will combine significant legal operational, financial, analytical, and/or project management experience and expertise to collaborate on the strategic design, planning, and implementation of programs and processes. This position will report to the Associate General Counsel and Vice President, Head of Strategy, Enablement, and Implementation, work closely in collaboration with other leaders in the business and legal departments such as finance, IT, data, and HR.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

In partnership across the organization, this role will lead the outside counsel management program, including RFPs and convergence programs to improve efficiencies and reduce costs of the outside counsel panel, and ensure the highest degree of quality of services are provided and value is realized. In addition, this role will:

  • Lead and drive all necessary and appropriate legal data analytics measures, including extracting, compiling, and interpreting data for reports and presentations to achieve clear, measurable outcomes for outside counsel.
  • Work cross-functionally on the departmental efforts to optimize the use of legal tech tools for outside counsel, including triage of matters, with the goals of harmonizing internal business processes and optimizing tools to enhance efficiency, decision making, and reduce costs, including but not limited to outside counsel performance and spend.
  • Lead a global team of panel managers and bill reviewers and serve as the leader to drive improved partnership.
  • Lead and support legal department initiatives and change management efforts internally and externally with a focus on outside counsel.
  • Support and grow the utilization of metrics and surveys, to enhance benchmarking and reporting for staffing, and spending to drive the business.
  • Collaborate with the legal operations team and work with senior legal leaders in strategic planning.
  • Collaborate to drive constant improvement for the legal department’s technology roadmap, across the whole spectrum of legal tech and data analytics. 
  • Identify opportunities in the department increase innovation to streamline routine tasks and maximize the use of legal counsel, both internally and externally.
  •  Liaise between the legal department and other business functions such as accounting, finance, business technology, procurement, and human resources regarding legal operations matters.
  • Identify potential workflow optimizations and develop process workflows between the department and business partners.
  •  Collaborate with senior legal leaders to determine staffing needs.  
  • Collaborate with senior legal leaders to increase operational efficiencies within the department.
  •  Perform other functions as required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • This job has supervisory duties.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • 15+ years of experience in a legal operations managerial role, preferably in a corporate legal environment.
  •  JD or MBA strongly preferred.
  •  In lieu of the above education requirements, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
  • No Certification, License or Registration is required for the job.

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS
  • Established track record in project management and implementation of systems and processes for legal operations within a distributed team.
  • Extensive experience with legal systems and resources, such as e-billing/matter management tools, dashboards, PowerBI, quality oversight programs for outside counsel, and legal tech tools.
  •  Solid understanding of finance concepts and processes.
  •  Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Word
  •  Strong written and verbal communication and conversational skills.
  •  Excellent organizational and data analytical skills.

Compensation

Compensation offered for this role is $173,250.00 - 224,437.50 annually and is based on experience and qualifications.
