Position Summary:

As the Director of Pathology Services at Natera, you will oversee all aspects of laboratory testing, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and the accuracy of patient test results. You will manage the histology lab's maintenance, including FFPE tissue block processing, slide staining/coverslipping/scanning, and the evaluation of HistoTechs and other lab personnel. Additionally, you will play a crucial role in strategic planning, team management, and the overall direction of pathology services.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Specimen Review: Collaborate with stakeholders to review patient specimens before testing.
  • Clinical Review: Analyze clinical notes and pathology reports to gather tumor information and perform tumor circling on H&E slides for molecular testing.
  • Report Approval: Approve and sign-out oncology test reports, primarily on NGS platforms, and possibly SNP array analysis and other methodologies.
  • Genetic Data Review: Oversee the review and interpretation of NGS and microarray results in the context of medical literature, databases, and patient data.
  • Support: Provide clinical and technical support to genetic counselors and laboratory personnel.
  • Standards Setting: Establish and maintain standards for laboratory testing and acceptable levels of analytic performance.
  • Publication Contribution: Analyze lab data and contribute to or write publications for scientific journals.
  • Clinical Consultant Role: Ensure proper assay utility, sample selection, test appropriateness, and consultation availability for test results interpretation.
  • Technical Supervisor Role: Oversee test method selection, method verification, proficiency testing enrollment, quality control programs, and personnel training and competency.
  • Team Management: Manage and lead a team, review and approve work, mentor personnel, and develop succession planning.
  • Strategic Planning: Contribute to the strategic direction and growth of pathology services.
  • HIPAA Compliance: Handle PHI regularly, complete necessary training within 30 days of hire, and maintain current training status.

Qualifications:

  • Education: MD/DO degree and ABP board-certified/eligible in AP/CP and Molecular Genetic Pathology preferred.
  • Licensing: Qualified for an unrestricted Medical License to practice in California (current California Medical License holder preferred).
  • Certification: Qualified or holding a current Certificate of Qualification in Genetic Testing from the NYS CLEP.
  • Experience: Five or more years in a CLIA-certified clinical laboratory setting analyzing, interpreting, and reporting clinical genetic/genomic data (fresh MGP fellowship graduates considered).
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with CAP, CLIA, California, and New York state regulations.
  • Management: Previous management experience required.
