Job Description

The Director of Data Platform will oversee the strategic management and operational execution of our data platform infrastructure. This role is responsible for ensuring high-quality, actionable data through effective management of data ingestion pipelines, data governance, and the semantic layer. Reporting to the VP of Data, Science, and Analytics, the Director will lead a team dedicated to maintaining and enhancing data systems to support the business's data-driven decision-making.

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables:

  • Data Platform Management:
    • Oversee and manage the ingestion pipelines to ensure efficient and reliable data flow.
    • Administer and optimize data platforms to support robust data operations.
    • Ensure the integration and operation of data systems align with business objectives and deliver accurate, timely insights.
  • Data Governance and Quality:
    • Develop and enforce data governance policies to ensure data quality, consistency, and compliance with relevant regulations.
    • Implement and manage data quality frameworks and processes to maintain high standards for data accuracy and integrity.
    • Monitor data governance activities, manage Data SLAs, and address issues proactively to ensure data is actionable and reliable.
  • Event Tracking and Semantic Layer:
    • Oversee the implementation and management of event tracking to capture and analyze user interactions and behaviors effectively.
    • Develop and maintain the semantic layer to facilitate consistent and meaningful data interpretation across the organization.
  • CDP Expertise:
    • Leverage Segment.io as the company’s Customer Data Platform (CDP) to manage event tracking and integrate data from multiple sources.
    • Ensure effective use of Segment.io to streamline data collection, improve data quality, and enhance the overall data strategy.
    • Stay updated with Segment.io features and best practices to maximize its utility in supporting business objectives.
  • Team Leadership:
    • Manage and mentor a team of data professionals, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
    • Provide guidance and support for team development, including recruitment, performance management, and career growth.
  • Strategic Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand data needs and provide actionable insights to drive business decisions.
    • Work closely with the VP of Data, Science, and Analytics to align data platform strategies with overall organizational goals and priorities.
  • Performance Monitoring and Reporting:
    • Develop a roadmap that ties directly to business outcomes to ensure value back to the business.
    • Implement strategies for efficient resource allocation, cost monitoring, and budgeting to ensure the data platform operates within financial constraints while maintaining high performance and scalability.
    • Provide regular updates and reports to senior management on data platform performance, challenges, and progress.

Technologies and Tools:

  • Ingestion Pipelines: Experience with tools such as Fivetran.
  • Data Platforms: Proficiency in technologies such as Databricks, Fivetran, Snowflake, and BigQuery.  In addition, experience with streaming technologies such as Kafka and Kinesis is a plus!
  • Data Governance: Knowledge of data governance frameworks and best practices, including Data SLAs.
  • CDP and Event Tracking: Familiarity with Segment.io, GA4, and similar tracking tools for capturing and analyzing user interactions and behaviors.
  • Semantic Layer: Experience with semantic layer management and data modeling.
  • Data Analysis and Visualization: Proficiency in SQL and experience with data analysis and visualization tools such as Tableau and Amplitude.

Qualifications

  • Experience:
    • Proven experience in managing data platforms and ingestion pipelines, with a strong background in relevant tools.
    • Extensive experience in data governance, data quality management, and the implementation of data tracking solutions.
    • Demonstrated success in managing and leading a team of data professionals.
  • Leadership:
    • Strong leadership and people management skills, with the ability to inspire and guide a team towards achieving strategic objectives.
    • Proven ability to manage cross-functional projects and collaborate effectively with various stakeholders.
  • Communication:
    • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on delivering actionable insights and solutions.
  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.

Compensation

  • Base Salary: $180,000 to $200,000 
  • Bonus - 30% of annual earnings
