The School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University is excited to announce the opening for a Digital Content Producer – Communications Spec III in the Office of Marketing & Communications.

The Opportunity:
The Digital Content Producer is responsible for developing and producing content for the ILR School’s varied digital platforms. This person will investigate themes, topics and events with people from across the school to design, edit, and publish stories that express the school’s identity, engage with our diverse audiences, and further marketing and communications strategies. They will use all the media they need to tell our stories, strategically using copy, images, video, social media, etc. The Digital Content Producer reports to the Marketing Director and collaborates with Marketing and Communications teams and stakeholders to represent and promote the ILR School.

Cornell communicators share a mission to enhance and preserve the university’s brand and reputation as a top research institution and a leader in higher education, and to support and promote critical programs that serve the university’s teaching, research, and public engagement mission. 

Communication services are carried out through a matrixed organizational system in which University Relations houses the departments of News (Cornell Chronicle), Media Relations (pitching and servicing media requests), Brand (cornell.edu, multimedia production, brand management and governance), Strategic Communications (communications plans, key messaging, social media management), and Cornellians (digital alumni publication).

Communicators in colleges, schools, and units regularly collaborate with, and consult, University Relations departments. University Relations serves as a partner and resource for all college/unit communicators.

Candidate Profile:
We are seeking candidates who will take ownership in the following, and not limited to:

  • Plans, designs and publishes content across the ILR School’s various digital platforms – producing content for our channels including social media (text, images, and video e.g. reels), webpages, campaign landing pages, and emails.
  • Makes sure our content supports storytelling, community engagement, and furthers marketing goals; writes high-quality copy for different audiences and on multiple channels, selects or creates visual and video assets that tell stories and increase engagement.
  • Investigates the messaging needs of key stakeholders in the school, including research, outreach and extension, education, and staff.
  • Supports data-driven decisions by using analytics to monitor and report on engagement and targets; researching and analyzing issues, audiences, and competitor trends.
  • Designs and executes user-research activities to improve audience engagement, experience, and understanding.
  • Takes responsibility for SEO best practices to make sure our content is findable.
  • Engages directly and indirectly with audiences – acting as an advocate for audience and users’ needs.
  • Develop content, update, and assist in monitoring the ILR’s social media channels (Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Facebook) and Engages with our audiences through content and conversation.
  • Ensures high production and content standards across all media (copy, images, video, etc) and channels (websites, social-media platforms, email campaigns, etc).
  • Serve as a Social Media Ambassador, working closely with University Relations (New Media) to ensure adherence to best practices, including consolidating accounts to maximize reach and strategy.
  • Addresses accessibility standards: designing and editing inclusive content.

What we need:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in communication, journalism, marketing, media or a similar field and 3 to 5 years of experience in content design and production or equivalent combination.
  • Superior writing and editing skills; strong understanding of how to write and design content for social media
  • Knowledge of image and video design tools
  • High level of proficiency in social media management tools
  • Experience developing distribution strategies for multiple social media platforms and audiences
  • Excellent judgment in sensitive and confidential situations, and the ability to follow established protocols
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects in a busy environment with flexibility, accuracy, efficiency, and attention to detail
  • Ability to make sense of complex topics and quickly synthesize clear stories
  • Familiarity with analytics tools (preferably Google Analytics), and SEO practices
  • Ability to deliver and receive feedback with diplomacy, empathy, and confidence
  • Commitment to effectively work and interact respectfully to foster a diverse and inclusive environment
  • Travel to Ithaca for occasional meetings will be required (2-4 times a year).

You will be a top candidate with our preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in photography and video editing and production, Google Analytics, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, marketing-automation tools, and any enterprise-scale CMS (e.g. Drupal) is desirable.

This is a full-time position within the ILR School on the Cornell Ithaca campus. This opportunity offers a flexible work arrangement for a hybrid or fully remote option.
