Data Visualisation Officer

Ember is recruiting a data visualisation officer to create highly impactful data visualisations and push our visually-led content to the next level, as our organisation continues to expand internationally. 

The role will report into the Visual Brand and Storytelling Officer, working within Ember’s digital communication team. You will work closely with policy experts, data analysts and fellow data visualisation experts to develop and design data visualisations and interactive data tools that elevate messages and insights that will help speed up the clean energy transition.

Ember has a great reputation for providing clear and eye-catching graphics that have helped shape the narrative for a clean electricity transition and have resulted in direct policy change. The data visualisation officer will help build on this level of impact while maintaining Ember’s reputation as a trusted brand.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the data and policy teams to develop customised data visualisations for data-rich reports and briefs 
  • Help find solutions to complex data visualisation problems, with the support of the wider data viz team
  • Support data and policy analysts to create their own graphics - with clear messaging - using our main publishing platform, Flourish.
  • Continue to build  your data analysis, design and storytelling skills, to expand the capabilities of the data viz team 
  • Co-create data-viz led content which amplify Ember’s core narratives 
  • Ensure Ember’s data visualisations and visual storytelling outputs have strong branding throughout and are consistent with Ember’s visual identity 
  • Work with the wider digital communications team to reach and encourage our target audiences to find insights from our open access data 
  • Stay abreast of the latest trends in the data visualisation industry, and test and recommend new data visualisation and visual storytelling creation techniques

Location

Fully remote; we in particular encourage anyone working from Asia to apply for this role, but applications from all time zones will be considered.

Requirements

Must have

  • Experience in creating accurate and impactful data visualisations using softwares such as Flourish, datawrapper, highcharts or R
  • An understanding of a data management software such as Python, R or Excel
  • Comfortable with analysing data and interpreting trends 
  • An eye for detail and good design 
  • Excellent collaboration skills 
  • Excellent problem-solving and task management skills 
  • Fluency in spoken and written English
  • An enthusiasm for data and data visualisation
  • An interest in the global electricity transition 
  • Experience telling stories with data that help to inform and influence audiences

Nice to have

  • Experience in coding interactive and responsive data visualisations from scratch using languages such as d3 or javascript
  • Experience analysing/visualising geospatial data, using a software such as GIS
  • Experience  using a graphic software such as Adobe Illustrator
  • Project management experience
  • Experience in tailoring communication outputs for a target audience
  • An ability to use Git and Github 
  • Experience in creating documentation and reference materials for capacity building
  • Ability or openness to train others - as a group or one-on-one
  • Ability to create animated data visualisations  
  • An interest in creating content for social media and other digital channels
  • Knowledge of the global electricity transition 
  • Other language skills (especially in Asia)

Benefits

Salary: £43,470 - £56,337 - depending on experience. Salaries may be adjusted depending on a location cost of living formula, but will not be below 75% of advertised figure.

Contract:  Full time (but only working 9 days every fortnight with no reduction in pay), permanent subject to a 3 month probationary period.  For employees based outside of the UK, a local payroll contract is available, dependent on the country.
