Cumulative Risk/Impacts Assessor

To support ICF’s dynamic growth and expanding client base, we are seeking a Cumulative Risk/Impacts Assessor to work in our Health Science Portfolio. This group of 130+ science professionals provide hazard assessment, exposure assessment, environmental modeling, epidemiology, toxicology, and related risk assessment support that addresses the full spectrum of potentially hazardous agents, including chemicals, microbes, and non-chemical stressors. We specialize in identifying, quantifying, and documenting the effects of environmental pollutants, such as metals, pesticides, and volatile organic compounds, on human health and the environment.

The Cumulative Risk/Impacts Assessor’s project work will support federal agencies (such as U.S. EPA and NIEHS) in developing reports that assess the human health impacts of pollutants and non-chemical stressors. Specific activities will include quantitative analysis, qualitative systematic review activities, outreach, communication, and project management. The Cumulative Risk/Impacts Assessor will contribute to the development of innovative, accurate, timely, and high-quality products and services, typically working on multiple projects with all levels of staff; they have the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge, gain exposure to major projects, and interact with experts and clients in the field, while building content knowledge and consulting skills.

The position is remote; hybrid positions are available in Reston, VA or Durham, NC.

As a Cumulative Risk/Impacts Assessor, you will:

  • Provide subject matter expertise in the areas of exposure assessment, cumulative risk assessment, and cumulative impact assessment, including applying cumulative impacts approaches to specific communities/research questions, conducting site-specific cumulative risk assessments.

  • Perform mixed methods research and community engagement, including outreach and communication activities, to aid in assessing non-chemical and chemical stressors in communities.

  • Provide support for systematic literature reviews of exposure and cumulative impacts articles.

  • Synthesize findings into written reports and scientific articles.

  • Provide project management for projects involving quantitative analyses, qualitative evaluations, and systematic literature reviews. Manage the day-to-day work associated with projects, including staffing, scheduling, communication, technical guidance, and quality assurance.

  • Mentor early-career scientists.

  • Contribute to proposal and business development efforts, including identifying new opportunities and helping to shape our cumulative impacts business.

As a Cumulative Risk/Impacts Assessor, you will have:

  • Experience conducting mixed methods research and applying collaborative approaches to engage disadvantaged communities.

  • Experience with government agencies (preferably U.S. EPA or NIEHS) is strongly preferred.

  • Experience conducting site-specific risk exposure modeling and risk assessment is preferred.

  • Familiarity with cumulative risk assessment and cumulative impact assessment approaches.

  • Knowledge of systematic review, risk communication, screening tools (e.g., EPA’s EJScreen, CDC’s EJI, etc.), and mapping tools (e.g., ArcGIS) is preferred.

  • Experience as a task or project manager.

  • Proactive and problem-solving approach to challenges, including working with clients to scope project activities to ensure their research questions are answered.

  • Demonstrated ability to formulate and execute technical approaches to solving scientific questions.

  • Strong quantitative and qualitative analysis skills.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work under strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental epidemiology, or related subject, with 2 years of experience, or equivalent education plus work experience.

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position. The pay range for this position is:

$76,848.00 - $130,642.00
