Summary Job Goal: The Corporate Counsel provides legal services, counsel, and advice to Association of Village Council Presidents (AVCP)’s Divisions and Departments.
Performance Responsibilities: Include the following –
- Prepares and Reviews legal documents including drafting, revising, and negotiating contracts, subawards, leases, MOUs and MOAs, and other legal agreements for AVCP divisions, programs, and departments.
- Conduct and coordinate research on a variety of legal issues concerning legal documents.
- Provides legal advice and assistance to AVCP Divisions and departments on legal documents as needed.
- Monitors compliance with contracts, subawards, and other agreements.
- Supports AVCP’s records retention program, including ensuring compliance with the Records Retention Policy and schedule.
- Assists in planning and conducting regular training on Legal Department contracts practices and processes, including contract approval, lease negotiations, and records retention.
- Stay up to date on laws and regulations related to AVCP’s Divisions and Departments, especially those impacting legal documents such as contracts and contract negotiations.
- Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE: Juris Doctorate from an accredited U.S. Law School. License to practice law in the State of Alaska or licensed in another U.S. jurisdiction with the ability to become licensed within one year of hire. At least three years of experience in non-profit, transactional, compliance, Indian law, or a comparable practice area required.

- Strong command of general legal principles and a basic understanding of applicable areas of practice.
- Ability to analyze, summarize, and present recommendations.
- Demonstrated understanding and efficiency in legal research and analysis.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate legal principles and case strategy to lay audiences.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including working in a team, working and communicating in a multi-cultural environment, working and communicating with remote teams, and receiving and giving constructive criticism.
- Ability to work independently.
