What you will be doing:

Premier Insurance provides management services to American Excess Insurance Exchange, RRG (AEIX), an excess professional liability reciprocal risk retention group, and also operates an insurance brokerage providing insurance products and services to healthcare entities and providers nationwide. The Controller leads a team that offers a wide variety of financial reporting and operational accounting to support the strategic direction for the company.  This role has the opportunity to participate in the development of optimum solutions for business challenges in a collaborative environment.  This key position requires the ability to learn quickly, apply critical thinking and analytical skills, manage multiple priorities and projects, and work diplomatically, collaboratively, and lead and communicate effectively in a team environment.

This position will be responsible for the management of the Premier Insurance finance staff and the monthly financial reporting process for Premier Insurance and American Excess Insurance Exchange, RRG (AEIX).  This position will assist in ensuring the accurate and timely accounting treatment of Premier Insurance and AEIX’s financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and insurance statutory accounting principles.  The position will manage the financial reporting process, financial operations (including A/P, A/R, and claims management reporting), forecasting, management reporting, financial analysis, member accounting, investment accounting, and cash management.  This position will have responsibility for the accuracy and overall data management of the claims system.

This position will work closely with senior leaders in the other functional areas within Premier Insurance and AEIX, as well as colleagues in corporate finance at Premier.  This position will maintain the internal control environment by ensuring compliance with key internal control procedures.

This position has primary responsibility for planning and managing the external audit process, including oversight of the fieldwork process and primary responsibility for the coordination with internal staff of all required audit material and support for the external auditors. This position is also responsible for coordinating with the accounting policy team on technical accounting matters of existing and upcoming US GAAP changes and their potential impact on Premier.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Analysis Leadership – 30%

  • Lead and develop the accounting and finance team that prepares and analyzes the financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Establish and maintain effective internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and regulations.

  • Coordinate and manage financial statement audits with external auditors, and manage the preparation of AEIX’s annual financial statements and footnotes

  • Manage the preparation of financial information required by Premier corporate for their financial reporting and SEC reporting needs

  • Manage the preparation of AEIX’s quarterly and annual report to the NAIC

Management Reporting and Analysis – 30%

  • Lead the accounting and finance team that develops the annual budgets and financial forecasts, monitoring performance against targets and providing insights to support strategic decision-making.

  • Conduct thorough analysis of financial data and performance metrics, identifying trends, variances, and opportunities for improvement.

  • Manage the claims management system by ensuring accurate and timely data, maintain internal control environment, and provide actionable reporting to all stakeholders

  • Manage the AEIX member subaccount reporting process

  • Work with consulting actuaries on reserving, and manage the analysis and reporting of the reserving process

  • Manage the accounts receivable process, including invoicing and collections

  • Manage the accounts payable and cash disbursement process

  • Manage the daily cash management process, including forecasting cash, executing trades on AEIX investments, and providing cash and treasury reporting to the Premier Insurance CFO

  • Manage projects for process improvement initiatives

  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned

Work Experience:

Years of Applicable Experience - 7 or more years

Education:

Bachelors (Required)


 

Preferred Qualifications

Skills:

  • Leadership experience in the property and casualty insurance industry

  • Working knowledge of reinsurance contracts and the accounting implications

  • Working knowledge of claim data and actuarial analyses

  • Experience in public accounting

  • Proven people leadership skills, specifically managing and developing a team

Experience:

  • Prior controllership experience

  • Certified Public Accountant

  • 10 or more years of applicable experience in insurance finance and accounting

Education:

  • Masters

Working Conditions: Remote


 

Travel Requirements: Travel 1-20% within the US


 

Physical Demands: Sedentary: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves remaining stationary most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if movement is required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.


 

Premier’s compensation philosophy is to ensure that compensation is reasonable, equitable, and competitive in order to attract and retain talented and highly skilled employees. Premier’s internal salary range for this role is $125,000 - $231,000. Final salary is dependent upon several market factors including, but not limited to, departmental budgets, internal equity, education, unique skills/experience, and geographic location. Premier utilizes a wide-range salary structure to allow base salary flexibility within our ranges.
