The Leidos Research Support Team supporting the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) is seeking a Computational Geoscientist to join their team. This remote position provides the opportunity to work with other data scientists, engineers, geologists, and computer scientists that produces technological solutions for America’s energy challenges. From developing creative innovations and efficient energy systems, to advancing technologies that enhance oil and natural gas extraction and transmission processes, NETL research is providing breakthroughs and discoveries that support home-grown energy initiatives, stimulate a growing economy, and improve the health, safety, and security of all Americans. Highly skilled professionals at NETL’s three research sites – Albany, Oregon; Morgantown, West Virginia, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – conduct a broad range of research activities that support DOE’s mission to advance the national, economic, and energy security of the United States. 

The successful candidate will assist with the development and improvement of computational risk assessment tools for geological carbon storage. Familiarity with software development using Python and reduced order model development is essential.  Additionally, an understanding of subsurface flow and transport (i.e., hydrogeology, petroleum engineering) will be valuable.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Developing computational risk analysis and assessment tools for geological carbon storage through collaboration with experts and assessment of complex stakeholder needs. 
  • Collaboratively preparing technical papers, reports, conference papers, and annual and quarterly reports.
  • Presenting the results of the research at technical conferences and publishing in archival journals.
  • Presenting technical findings during regular team meetings as well as at workshops and professional conferences.
  • Collaborating with a multidisciplinary group of expert scientific researchers to accomplish multiple project tasks and independently identifying methods to improve current approaches.
  • Build relationships with internal and external clients.  

Required Education, Experience & Other:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, hydrogeology, petroleum engineering, reservoir engineering, wellbore engineering, machine learning, data science, math, computational geology, geophysics, physics or similar field with 5+ years of relevant working experience. Or a Master’s degree in computer science, hydrogeology, petroleum engineering, reservoir engineering, wellbore engineering, machine learning, data science, math, computational geology, geophysics, physics or similar field with 3+ years of relevant working experience
  • Experience with software development in Python; demonstrated knowledge of common Python libraries such as NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, Matplotlib.
  • Experience with version control systems such as git
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Must be able to meet the requirements for gaining access to work on the NETL systems/campus.
  • Must be willing to travel periodically as business needs require (1-3 times a year)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms
  • Knowledge of Python machine learning packages such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras
  • Evidence of substantive participation in subsurface geologic scientific community

Pay Range:

Pay Range $81,250.00 - $146,875.00

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary.
