Position Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Community Environmental Coordinator to lead and manage outreach efforts, community engagement, and environmental initiatives for underserved and impacted communities. This role will focus on fostering collaboration, building coalitions, and advancing environmental best practices to address pressing environmental issues affecting these communities. The ideal candidate will have a background in environmental protection, community engagement, and coalition-building, with a strong commitment to social and environmental justice.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Build and manage stakeholder relationships, by cultivating stakeholder contacts, managing stakeholder communications, and attending and designing stakeholder meetings.
  • Develop an engagement plan that describes priorities and timelines that serve BOEM and communities, including a plan for leadership and relevant office review (e.g., Office of Communications).
  • Curate a targeted contact list of community-based organizations, local community leaders, Tribal Nations, Alaska Native Corporations, Alaska Natives, State and Local government partners, Tribal entities, Native Hawaiian Organizations, and other stakeholders with roles at the intersection of offshore renewable energy and underserved communities.
  • Plan and implement engagement outreach, including social media toolkits or other mechanisms most relevant for the target audiences.
  • Develop a Language Access Plan and Strategy for the bureau and regional offices. Provide access to information and opportunities for meaningful involvement for individuals who are non-English speaking or have limited English proficiency in communities.
  • Facilitate meetings and develop associated products (agenda, meeting notes, and a deliverable that describes how input was utilized).
  • Develop methods for enhanced community engagement and outreach to establish and continue long-term relationships (e.g., BOEM presence at local community events).
  • Refine BOEM’s procedures for processing public input; develop ways to identify input that falls within BOEM’s purview, or that may be shared with relevant partners and cooperating agencies; develop ways to communicate these actions, including feedback and metrics from early discussions, with engagement participants.
  • Develop metrics or methods of tracking bureau environmental engagement initiatives serving impacted communities.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Public Administration, Business or related field required.
  • Minimum of 5-8 years of experience in environmental outreach, community engagement, or related roles, particularly working with underserved and impacted communities.
  • Proven experience in building and sustaining coalitions and networks, with a focus on environmental justice.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups of people, including community members, organizations, government agencies, and environmental groups.
  • Experience in environmental protection and advocating for policies that improve environmental conditions for disadvantaged communities.

  • Experience building and maintaining coalitions and networks specifically related to underserved communities and the environment.
  • Experience fostering and maintaining collaboration to advance environmental best practices for underserved and impacted communities.

This is a 100% remote position


Physical Demands

  • Sitting/Standing: This role is generally sedentary performing sitting work utilizing technological office equipment including a laptop, mouse, keyboard, computer monitors, telephones, and scanners, copiers, and fax machines. 
  • Walking: This role requires the ability to move about inside the office to access technological equipment required for the role. 
  • Stooping/Kneeling/Crouching/Crawling: This role may require stooping to reload printer trays with print paper. 
  • Using Hands/Fingers: This role constantly operates technological office equipment such as laptop, mouse, keyboard, computer monitors, telephones, and scanners, copiers, and fax machines.
  • Talking/Hearing: This role requires constant communication with others in the organization to exchange information, review information, and make decisions about information. 
  • Seeing: This role requires the ability to see, view, and distinguish all aspects of daily task.
