Department Overview 

Community-Engaged Learning and Research (CELR), together with Global Initiatives, the Collaboratory, and Undergraduate Research and Creative Projects make up the Office of Connected Learning (OCL) within Academic Affairs. The OCL promotes and supports access to a range of learning experiences connecting you to new skills, research opportunities, community, and the world by applying your knowledge outside the classroom and diving deeper into a field of your interest. You will develop skills and knowledge which can support future career connections and roles in the community  

CELR courses are hands-on, reflective, skill-building opportunities for students to engage with campus and community projects. Through a mutually beneficial exchange with community partners, students apply theory to practice, develop professional experience, and contribute to the public good. By providing orientations, advising, specialized workshops, and leadership opportunities, the CELR unit within the Office of Connected Learning supports students in their development as professionals and engaged citizens. Additionally, CELR staff manages relationships with community partners in a variety of sectors (government, non-profits, K-12 education, small business,) and support faculty with CELR coordination and curriculum development. 

Position Overview 

This student position will support the administration and coordination of Community-Engaged Learning and Research (CELR) courses. The student will be trained to use the UW EXPO database, which helps track community partners, students, and faculty engaged in CELR courses. The student will also deliver first-year, transfer, and admitted student orientation presentations about CELR throughout the summer and year and assist with on campus event planning. Strong communication, project management and coordination skills are important as there will be ongoing opportunities to interact with students, faculty, and community partners, as well as manage, organize, and visualize different types of data. 

The CELR Program Assistant position is a commitment for the full academic year, with an average of 12-19.5 hours per week. Hours can fluctuate; at peak times hours may go up to 19.5 hours, and during slower times hours can fall below 12. Individual check-in meetings will be held weekly. The person selected for this position will have extensive training, onboarding, and the opportunity to shadow the current Program Assistant during Spring and Summer quarters. 

Responsibilities 

Community Engagement Data Administration, Tracking and Management 

  • Assist in updating and maintaining EXPO database by: Preparing CELR courses for each quarter as per the CELR Timeline 
  • Updating community partner and organization contact information 
  • Managing the input and tracking of CELR self-placement forms and evaluations 
  • Editing and updating CELR Course Canvas Modules and grading student risk management tracking documents 

Communications

  • Regular email, phone and in-person communication with administration, faculty, staff, community partners, and students regarding CELR courses, services, and opportunities 
  • Quarterly emails to students regarding opportunities and end of quarter CELR course evaluations 
  • Opportunity to assist CELR Communications Assistant with display and marketing materials in various formats

Orientations and Campus Outreach 

  • Give presentations about CELR to incoming transfer and first-year students 
  • Table at student outreach fairs and admitted student events – familiarize students with CELR 
  • Promote unfilled volunteer opportunities to students interested in community engagement 
  • Orient CELR students in youth risk management safety and how to work with community partners. 

Data Collection and Tracking 

  • Track CELR course related data in spreadsheets and in the community engagement management system 
  • Prepare documents, spreadsheets, and data visualizations (when necessary) 
  • Keep Connected Huskies Database up to date with community partner opportunities 

CELR Team ​​​

  • Attend quarterly staff and planning meetings, as needed 
  • Take part in the CELR hiring process (resumes, interviews, evaluation) for new additions to the team 
  • Potential to join Community Partner site visits to help engage with partnership relations process

Hours per week: 10-15

Hourly pay rate: $20.76/hr 

Estimated work period: Approximately March 31, 2025 - March 31, 2025

Qualifications

Desired Qualifications 

  • Currently enrolled UW Bothell student 
  • Eligibility for work study benefits for 2025-2026 academic year 
  • Have experience with CELR courses or OCL programs 
  • The ability to provide strong customer service and communicate professionally with faculty, staff, community partners, and students 
  • Strong writing and organizational skills 
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet project deadlines 
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, Google applications (Forms and Sheets) 
  • Able to start early-Spring 2025, and commit to at least four consecutive quarters 
  • Be available on occasional Saturdays 
  • Be available to work some hours over winter, summer and spring break
