Department Overview:

The Office of Academic & Career Success (OACS), previously known as the Office of Undergraduate Advising, provides central coordination and resources for the distributed undergraduate advising, learning support, and career services functions at UW–Madison. OACS provides training, technology, professional development, data, and community development opportunities. OACS also convenes decision making bodies for these three communities of staff.

OACS provides direct services to students through seven sub-units: the Career Exploration Center, Cross-College Advising Service, Greater University Tutoring Services, Center for Pre-Health Advising, Center for Pre-Law Advising, Undergraduate Academic Awards, and the Office of Online Student Success.

Schedule:

General hours will be Monday-Friday between the hours of 8:30am-5pm, with infrequent, pre-planned evening and weekend hours (e.g. attendance at campus resource fairs). Preference will be given to students who have longer availability of hours to work at one time (e.g. 10am-3pm CST, etc).

Work Study welcome but not required. The ideal candidate will be interested in staying with the office through at least Fall 2025.

The intern will work approximately 10-12 hours per week.

Students will be provided a workspace in the Middleton Building on campus, alongside PPA professional and student staff. Some remote work may be possible as determined by the supervisor after a period of training and based on performance.

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

$15.00/hour

Qualifications:

- Current UW-Madison undergraduate
- Strong communication skills, including capacity to work effectively with a diverse range of staff, other student interns, and advisees engaging with the office
- Interest in communications/marketing through social media engagement and learning how to create communications campaigns
- Detail-oriented, with the ability to self-start and proactively clarify expectations as needed
- Enjoy working independently and as part of a team

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Some experience in communications, e.g. social media, graphic design, newsletters, websites, is preferred but not required! Training will also be provided.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The primary duties of this internship include managing and executing social media strategy, including developing a content calendar, creating engaging content, analyzing performance metrics, and contributing to the overall growth of the Centers for Pre-Health and Pre-Law Advising’s online presence.

Other responsibilities include crafting communications materials (e.g. flyers, newsletters, website content, etc.) related to advising, programming, and other events. This position is part of a team of communications interns, each of whom support the units in different ways.

- Work with our professional Communications Coordinator to implement social media campaigns, design marketing materials, track analytics, and maintain a content calendar
- Assist unit staff with projects on an as-needed basis
- Work alongside other student and professional staff members to create a welcoming space
- Cross-train with other office interns to support overall operations as needed, including checking-in advisees for appointments, answering phone calls, checking and responding to voicemails, picking up mail, etc.
- Represent the offices at on-campus events, including Student Orientation, Advising, & Registration (SOAR)
