Description

The Commissioning Assistant will support the Journals team with day-to-day activities across a number of allocated subject portfolios of journals. The role will involve providing dedicated administrative support, conducting market research to support portfolio growth and development, and deputizing for Commissioning Editors in their absence. The Commissioning Assistant may also be directly responsible for the management of a small assigned sub-set of a portfolio.

Location: We perform at our best when we feel trusted and are able to choose an approach to working that suits us best, which is why we are a remote-first company. However, we also believe in face to face collaboration, and our UK colleagues meet once a month for team time and quarterly for company get togethers in our Leeds office, so we ask that you be within a commutable distance that you are comfortable with in order to attend the office on those occasions. 

Day to day we’ll trust you to:   

  • Prepare publishing reports, updating journal homepages, research and administrative support on journal development plans, maintain special issue tracker, maintain a list of content, workflow and platform enhancements related to journals
  • Ensure all editors are contracted and all information is up to date on relevant internal databases
  • Provide support for project work and effective cross-functional working to help to achieve department targets
  • Ensure that author contracts and contributor agreements are sent out, followed up and logged
  • Assist the Commissioning Editor in carrying out individual research projects as directed
  • Provide support for collation of editor payments
  • Support marketing and social media, arrange conference materials
  • Support internal and external award programmes
  • Contribute to the management of budgets
  • Assist the Commissioning Editor with the management of the forward programme aligned to our SDGs/Emerald Goals and backlist of maintenance and lower support journals

You’ll need to have:   

Skills:

Good written and interpersonal skills

Knowledge:
  • An overview of Emerald’s products
  • Publishing experience, marketing experience or work experience within a commercial environment is advantageous but not essential
  • Developing understanding of content licensing and copyright knowledge
  • Developing an understanding of publishing ethics
  • Willingness to acquire depth knowledge and familiarity with Emerald and third-party systems
  • Working towards an understanding of the academic publishing environment
