Climate Change Adaptation Engineer
Gloucester, GB
Gloucester Business Park. Hybrid, flexible working arrangements available with occasional travel to site. Please note we are happy to accept full-time (37 hours) and part-time (from 22.2 hours) applications.
Join EDF as a Climate Change Adaptation Engineer, and you’ll join one of the most exciting and ambitious net Zero projects, as we continue to lead the rebirth of nuclear in the UK.
The Opportunity
At EDF we are building two new nuclear reactors at Hinkley Point C, the first in a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK providing low carbon electricity for around six million homes. We also have a fleet of operating stations, and are preparing for the construction of two further reactors at Sizewell C in Suffolk.
To support EDF’s long-term contribution to Net Zero, we are looking for a Climate Change Adaptation Engineer. We’re seeking someone enthusiastic about addressing the impacts of climate change and ensuring the resilience of EDF’s nuclear fleet to the future climate.
In your role, you’ll ensure that the impacts of climate change are fully considered in the design and operation of our nuclear plants, from construction activities through to decommissioning. You’ll be looking ahead for the lifetime of our plants and evaluating the climate change related impacts that may affect them. This may include external natural hazards such as extreme weather and coastal effects, as well as the more gradual effects of a changing climate on the wider organisation, people and processes.
This is an exciting role within a new and developing team in Nuclear Services, providing the opportunity to shape the future direction of EDF's Climate Change Adaptation Programme, while developing your own experience through collaborative working and on the job training.
Pay, benefits and culture
Alongside a starting salary from £52,000 (negotiable depending one experience) and a market-leading pension scheme, your package will include a range of benefits, from the big and formal to the small and personal.
We’re talking about everything from enhanced parental leave to electric vehicle leasing, health insurance to product discounts, critical illness insurance to technology vouchers, gym membership to season ticket loans.
At EDF UK, we embrace flexibility while recognising that everyone's working needs are different. Whether you're in our office spaces, on site, or working remotely, we promote an environment that supports collaboration, connection, and comfort. No matter where you are, our priority is to make sure you feel safe, valued, and celebrated.
Here, we do right by each other and everyone’s welcome. We’re on an action-oriented journey, championing equity, diversity, and inclusion. We’d like our future workforce to have an equal gender balance, represent a broad mix of people from minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+, those with a disability and supporting social mobility.
We’re a disability confident employer and we’ll do all we can to help with your application. Please let us know if you need to request reasonable adjustments.
We take pride in fostering a dynamic and inclusive environment, where the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our employees drive fresh thinking and innovation. We understand that success means different things to different people. We believe there are multiple definitions of what it means to succeed. That’s why we support you to pursue a career that’s unique to you. Because success is personal.
What you’ll be doing
In this role, you’ll be collaborating across departments to create and strengthen systems for evaluating and managing climate-related risks, ensuring we’re prepared through assessments and adaptation planning.
You’ll translate climate data and projections into practical solutions for our industry, while also providing strategic and technical guidance on these risks.
Additionally, you’ll support nuclear licensees in their assessments and adaptation efforts, develop governance and oversight processes, and maintain up-to-date knowledge of external climate change requirements.
Engaging with both internal and external groups, including UK and international forums, you’ll share insights and contribute to broader climate resilience and adaptation strategies.
Who you are
You have a degree-level qualification in engineering, environmental science, or a related field (or equivalent experience), paired with a genuine passion for climate change adaptation and environmental issues.
You’re a proactive and independent worker, skilled in managing a diverse portfolio of tasks and developing practical solutions from start to finish. With strong communication skills, you can engage effectively with both internal and external stakeholders, including nuclear licensees, and coordinate collaborative, multi-disciplinary efforts to meet shared objectives.
Given the cross-cutting nature of climate change resilience, we welcome a broad range of relevant experience to complement our developing team.
Desirable experience for the role includes:
- Chartered member of an engineering, scientific or engineering institution.
- Working with academic and research bodies to provide insight to industry.
- Experience in development and delivery of climate change risk assessments and supporting processes.
- Experience in environmental management, permitting and compliance.
- Programme management and delivery experience.
- Knowledge of Pressurised Water Reactor and EPR design.
- Expertise in climate modelling and scenario development.
- Experience of climate change risk assessment and adaptation planning.
- Knowledge of meteorological behaviour and phenomena, including extreme events.
- Knowledge of coastal effects and risks, such as erosion and flooding impacts.
If any of the above sounds like you, we would love to hear from you!
Closing Date: 24th November 2024
Success is personal. It’s your journey, powered by us. Join us and we’ll help Britain achieve Net Zero, together.
