Change.org is searching for a Civic Engagement Specialist to drive meaningful engagement between public officials and our petition starters & supporters. Reporting to our Director of Scaled Impact, you will build and scale a proactive outreach engine in order to strengthen public accountability and amplify the real-world impact of our platform.

Key outcomes

  • Establish a repeatable outreach workflow to engage decision makers via email, phone, and social media.
  • Maintain high outreach volume to secure responses, meeting requests, or public statements from decision makers.
  • Track outreach volume, response rates, and engagement outcomes via Salesforce.
  • Develop and refine outreach scripts and playbooks tailored to different decision maker profiles.
  • Identify high-leverage petition opportunities and share insights with cross-functional teams to inform strategy and product improvements.

The core competencies for the role are:

  • Outbound communication: You are confident and compelling in your cold outreach via email, phone, and social media to drive engagement. You are skilled at quick-turnaround research to identify the right point of contact for outreach. You gather context and tailor your messaging as needed.
  • Relationship building: You easily establish rapport and credibility with public officials, aides, and other key stakeholders. You are skilled at asking the right questions, aligning incentives, and driving a conversation towards an end goal.
  • Organization: You excel at managing high volumes of outreach activity. You can juggle multiple outreach pipelines, track engagement across different channels, and ensure timely follow-ups. You’re comfortable using CRMs like Salesforce to log interactions, manage pipelines, and keep your work visible and organized for team visibility.
  • Performance-driven mindset: You rely on data to guide and improve your outreach, and you pivot in response to new information and learnings. Based on performance, you iterate on messaging, timing, and targeting. Your adaptability enables you to quickly change course when something isn’t working.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: You know how to work across and within teams to drive alignment and impact. You share insights and surface feedback from your audience to inform messaging and product opportunities. You're proactive in communication and thrive in a collaborative environment.

Target experience

  • 1–2 years of experience in a BDR (business development representative), SDR (sales development representative), or other outreach-focused role
  • Demonstrated success in cold outreach (email, phone, social) and can speak to tactics used to engage hard-to-reach contacts.
  • Comfortable using CRM tools (e.g., HubSpot, Salesforce) to track outreach and manage pipelines.
  • Experience researching prospects and tailoring messaging to different audiences.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to be persuasive, concise, and professional.
  • Bonus: experience engaging with public officials, government offices, or community leaders is a plus, but not required.

Our compensation philosophy is based on pay equity. All of our salaries are determined before we launch a role – they are based on a predetermined salary scale, the level on that scale and the cost of labor for that location. The annual salary of a Civic Engagement Specialist is $110,000 in NYC and San Francisco, $104,500 in Austin, Boston, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Washington, D.C, and $93,500 in all other US locations.

Benefits include unlimited PTO, 18 weeks of paid parental leave, and a variety of mental & physical health perks.
