Chief Engineer at Large

The Chief Engineer-at-large oversees the technical direction and quality of a portfolio of projects.

Role Objectives
The key objectives of the role include:

  •  Set the technical direction of projects, starting in the pursuit phase and continuing through detailed design.
  •  Ensure quality in all design deliverables.
  • Provide technical mentorship to design teams.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute with other technical leadership and subject matter experts (SMEs) on projects.
  • Provide expert technical support to Portfolio Design Manager (PDM) and the Client Service Team.
  • Work with the Design Chief Engineer (DCE) to set and update quality and delivery standards.
  • Participate in developing and publishing regular Design Guidelines, Notes from the Trenches and other technical training materials.
  • Direct the quality managers on design projects.
  • Oversee the quality management process for projects.
  • Collaborate with SMEs to support project needs.
  • Mentor and train the Portfolio Delivery team on the design process.
  • Determine deliverable product quality meets project and BC standards.

Authority

  • Approval of design project deliverables.
  • Appropriate QA throughout development of deliverable.
  • Appropriate QC on deliverable products.
  • Appropriate QC on foundational engineering decisions (calculations/assumptions).
  •  Application of appropriate BC standards and best practices.
  • Facilitate foundational technical decisions for design projects: engage SMEs as appropriate.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, or Environmental) preferred. Bachelor’s degree minimum requirement.
  • Minimum 20+ years of design related experience including project engineer and design manager roles for water and wastewater treatment and conveyance projects preferred.
  • Minimum 10+ years of experience in group or team leadership preferred.
  • P.E. required, with ability to register in multiple states within six months.
  • Ability to work with Client organizations at all levels.
  • Ability to engage manufacturer technical experts to solve project issues.
  • Ability to engage and participate in national industry conferences through technical presentations.
  • Ability to productively engage and gain trust of delivery teams.
  • Ability to facilitate and/or make technical decisions.
  • Ability to understand multi-discipline delivery of large treatment plants and pump stations and their associated facilities.
  • Experience in Design-Build project delivery preferred.
  • Knowledge of company-wide technical resources to leverage technical expertise.
  • UT expectation: 60 percent through direct project review and design team mentoring.

Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee’s primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education.  These ranges may be modified in the future.

Salary:

Location A: $168,000 - $225,000
