Purpose of Position

This position offers care and support to crisis and emergency situations according to established policies. Other duties include assisting students with special circumstance situations, perform judicial affairs responsibilities as outlined by the Code of Student Life, serve as the primary coverage for the front lobby, main phone line and the main office email, general consultation with faculty, staff and students, and other duties as assigned.

Duties & Responsibilities

Student Support and Care Response:

  • Provide assistance, advocacy and consultation to faculty, families, staff, students and others (care referrals).
  • Refer faculty, staff, students and others to other University resources as appropriate.
  • Appropriately document issues, responses and referrals.
  • Advise students on all aspects of the Special Circumstance Late Drop/Withdrawal process.
  • Coordinate appropriate response to critical incidents and emergencies involving students that are brought forward by faculty, staff, families, students, etc.
  • Conduct parental notification in response to critical incidents as needed and appropriate.
  • Contact appropriate campus partners related to crisis situations (i.e. Housing, Aviation, and Athletics).
  • Prepare, process, and send student death notifications. 

Perform Judicial Affairs Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a conduct officer in the investigation, support, and adjudication of potential violations of the Code of Student Life.
  • Advise faculty members, administrators, and other members of the community on how to address issues concerning disruptive or disturbing student behaviors.
  • Maintain current knowledge of federal and university policies and procedures related to student judicial affairs.
  • Assist in the annual preparation of crime information and data for compliance with the Janne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Ace and the SaVE Act, as requested.
  • Coordinate appropriate response to behavioral concerns involving students that are brought forward to Community Standards & Care Network. 

Department Staff Member and Other Related Duties:

  • Serves as the primary coverage for the front lobby area and main phone line.
  • Receive and distribute daily incoming mail.
  • Act as the telecommunications phone counselor contact.
  • Monitor department email account and workflow to the appropriate staff member.
  • Manage department inventory.
  • Purge files according to records management and retention schedule for department.
  • Help maintain and facilitate SafeColleges/Vector training for students.
  • Collaborate with other staff members to develop and carry out appropriate strategies and action steps needed to accomplish institutional goals and priorities as they relate to student development.
  • Serve as a positive representative of Community Standards & Care Network and contribute to creating an optimistic and enthusiastic workplace culture that challenges and energizes students and personnel to reach higher levels of personal and professional excellence and achievement through the fostering of teamwork, collaborative decision-making, and effective communication.
  • Provides support to the Dean of Students and Community Standards & Care Network colleagues in the development of a strategic plan, goals, and objectives for Community Standards & Care Network.
  • Provides support to the Dean of Students and the Assistant Directors in developing outreach and marketing materials used for website, print, and social media.
  • Provides support to the Dean of Students and the Assistant Directors for the development and distribution of reports and assessments that will assist Community Standards & Care Network and University stakeholders in the ability to work with students more effectively.
  • Ensures all correspondence and reports produced on behalf of Community Standards & Care Network are accurate and consistent.
  • Relates effectively to and serves as a resource and liaison to students, parents, faculty, and administration and handles difficult and volatile situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Represents the Dean of Students and/or the Assistant Directors as appropriate.
  • Assumes other responsibilities as designated by the Dean of Students and/or the Assistant Directors.
  • Attend and participate in relevant professional development opportunities (i.e. conferences and/or workshops) to stay up to date on research, best practices, and to network with colleagues across the country on relevant trends in higher education, care and support, student development, assessment, student conduct, and emergency/crisis response. 

Division Staff Member and Other Related Duties:

  • Develops and maintains liaison and collaborative relationships with University offices such as Housing, University Polices, University Counseling Center, Student Health and Wellness, Registrar, Admissions, Athletics, academic advisors, deans, etc.
  • Represents Community Standards & Care Network and provides leadership to University and Divisional committees, as assigned.
  • Is designated as a campus security authority (Clery Act) and a Deputy Title IX Coordinator (Title IX) and completes requirements associated with each designation. 

Required Competencies:

• Knowledge and experience in providing student support services.
• Knowledge and experience in crisis intervention.
• Knowledge and experience in campus judicial work.
• Strong understanding in the requirements of (FERPA) Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, the CLERY ACT, and Title IX.
• Demonstrated problem-solving and leadership skills.
• Demonstrated ability to manage complex administrative processes effectively and efficiently.
• Ability to work collaboratively across all institutional lines including a proven record of effective working relationships with faculty, athletics, law enforcement and service agencies.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a diverse community of students, faculty, staff and family members and the ability to handle difficult and volatile situations with tact and diplomacy.
• Demonstrated understanding of issues facing diverse student populations in higher education.
• Appreciation and commitment to a research institution which provides a liberal arts education coupled with strong professional programs.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and excellent analytical and judgment skills.
• Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize current software.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in College Student Personnel Administration, Student Affairs Administration, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Education, Criminal Justice, Sociology, or related field.
  • 1 year of experience providing service to students in an education setting.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree.
  • 1 year experience in higher education.
  • Experience with student conduct software (Maxient), PeopleSoft, or other higher education related software.
