Department Overview:

University Health Services (UHS) offers award-winning, high quality medical, mental health, prevention, and wellness services to enrolled UW-Madison students. As a part of UHS, Badger Recovery connects and supports students in or considering recovery from substance use, eating disorders, and/or addictive behaviors. Our program offers weekly recovery meetings, recovery-informed social events, and recovery coaching. Badger Recovery embraces all definitions of recovery, whether that includes abstinence or harm reduction, and offers a welcoming and judgment-free space to support students on their personal recovery journey. We put our recovery first and embody our values of community, inclusion, open-mindedness, compassion, accountability, service, and well-being in all of our services.

Schedule:

Hours can range depending on the week. On weeks with few events, the student will work closer to 10 hours. However, if there is an event or project requiring additional support, a student may work closer to 20 hours. The work schedule will include committing to 1-2 evening recovery meetings, weekly team meeting, weekly check-in with a supervisor, and occasional weekend events (at least monthly).

The schedule for evening recovery meetings + community time in the Spring is as follows:
• For applicants with personal experience in recovery, their recovery meeting would be either Mondays (6-9pm) or Wednesdays (5:45-7:30pm)
• For students interested in facilitating our LGBT+ Rainbow Recovery meetings, the recovery meeting commitment would include Mondays (5-6pm)
• For applicants with family/friends in recovery, the recovery meeting commitment would include Thursdays (5:30-6:30pm)

There may be additional evening or weekend requirements, depending on the week. Other responsibilities will be conducted in a hybrid work format, with some work taking place remotely and other work taking place in our UHS office. The amount of remote hours will vary week-to-week depending on the assigned tasks.

Qualifications:

Required:
• Passionate about recovery and comfortable speaking to individuals and groups on this topic
• Supports Badger Recovery’s philosophy on harm reduction and is supportive of all recovery pathways
• Commitment to social justice and health equity
• Exceptional interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to facilitate and navigate challenging conversations (individually and in groups)
• Possesses an open-mind and holds a non-judgmental space for all students
• Lived experience with recovery (self or loved ones); Familiarity with recovery principles and recovery pathways
• Understanding of or willingness to learn trauma-informed practices
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Excellent organizational, project management, and time management skills
• Flexible and team-oriented
• Excellent administrative and organizational skills
• Available to facilitate evening recovery meetings and stay later to host community time; also available to work Friday or Saturday nights for events (1-2 events per month)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Preferred (NOT Required):
• Knowledge of local and/or national recovery communities and services
• Experience with facilitating groups or discussions related to mental health and/or recovery
• Currently enrolled in a graduate or professional program at UW-Madison (Psychology, Social Work, Education, Population Health or a related field)
• Knowledge of and experience with social media, particularly Instagram
• Experience with design software, including Canva
• Experience with event planning, coordinating event logistics, and hosting events
• Experience developing and maintaining strategic partnerships and collaborative projects
• Experience working with LGBTQIA+ student population
• Demonstrated ability to appropriately respond to confidential and privileged information
• Experience developing, delivering, and evaluating programs for diverse audiences
• Experience with data collection, data analysis, and report writing

Position Summary/Job Duties:

• Support Badger Recovery Student Assistants with assigned tasks
• Work with Badger Recovery members to plan social and educational events on campus; Coordinate event logistics and host events
• Conduct administrative tasks, related to events and other Badger Recovery needs
• Assist with developing and implementing a communications and outreach plan
• Build partnerships with university and community partners and spread awareness of Badger Recovery
• Develop and present recovery ally training to campus partners and students
• Organize logistics for and co-facilitate non-clinical student recovery meetings
• Co-host weekly staff meetings with Badger Recovery Students Assistants to discuss program logistics
• Serve as a resource and referral source to students in recovery
• Assist with planning and implementing ongoing assessment and evaluation of programming
• Develop ideas to further develop the Badger Recovery program and participate in brainstorm sessions with Badger Recovery staff
• Engage in professional development relating to recovery
• Represent UHS/Badger Recovery at resource fairs
• Review research and literature on topics related to recovery in a college setting
• Support UHS Prevention staff as needed
